Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This carefully reasoned, historically minded volume examines human thinking about dogs as much as it speculates about the cognitive abilities of dogs themselves. Coren, a psychologist, dog trainer and lifelong dog devote, makes no bones about his respect for canine intelligence, and he shores up his discussion with examples, with thoughtfully analyzed surveys of veterinarians, dog obedience judges and other experts, and with research findings from ethologists and animal behaviorists. He identifies various aspects of canine intelligence, noting, for example, that a dog with a pronounced aptitude for problem-solving (e.g., a poodle or Doberman pinscher) cannot perform mundane tasks like herding or hunting nearly as well as supposedly less intelligent dogs (sheepdogs or terriers) that have been bred for these skills. He then assesses different breeds with regard to their intellectual strengths and weaknesses, taking pains to demonstrate that sensitive, consistent handling can enormously enhance the skills of a "not-so-smart dog" and that inept handling can be ruinous to a canine Einstein. Tests allow readers to calculate the IQs of their own dogs; determined owners can implement sensible suggestions designed to strengthen their pet's brainpower.

From Library Journal

The author, a research psychologist and dog trainer, has drawn heavily on both disciplines to present the natural history of dogs and theories about their minds. He outlines the three factors encompassing total intelligence--instinctive intelligence, learning and problem-solving, and obedience potential--and shows readers how to attain a dog's innate potential. Coren describes the various uses for dogs, and he lists the breeds most and least suitable for each. He also includes aptitude and intelligence tests. This is an excellent reference for those who wish to train dogs for such purposes as obedience shows, this will also interest readers who want just house pets besause of the information on selection and training and the historical and anecdotal content. The extensive bibliography lists books in groupings by specific topics. For natural history and pet collections.

as Stanley Coren says "there are three general categories of books about dogs: veterinary books, books on dog training and obedience, and photograph-filled books describing the various dog breeds", well, The Intelligence of Dogs is the fourth kind of book that I was really searching for. Enjoying it very much!

I found myself wishing this were longer! It's well written, with some interesting facts about dogs. I've read a lot of similar literature, and this doesn't contain a whole lot of new information, but it's definitely worth a read. Coren has some good input on several subjects, and the canine IQ test is pretty cool.

This is a good book that answers the questions I had about which breed of dog to get that would be easy to train, which would be a good guard or watch dog, a family dog or which dog might be rather aloof and hard to integrate into the family.

I have had my own copy of this book since it was first published, and I love it. This copy is for a surgeon friend of mine who is contemplating getting a dog for the first time. This man MUST have a dog that is intelligent, as anything less would be tragic for both dog and human. I suggested he consider a German Shepherd, and got this book for HIM to educate himself on the intelligence of DOGS! :-)

I must admit that I had read this book before but always wanted my own copy. This is an excellent book again by Stanley Coren. The depth of his insight into the workings of our dogs minds is mind boggling & this is a MUST read book. The section on an intelligence test for dogs is outstanding in any way that you look at it. (it is also quite testing for people too.) I was fortunate all those years ago to receive permission from the author to reproduce this section & use it for dogs who come to me for Obedience & Agility Training. I could rave on about this book so let me conclude by saying, 'You must purchase this book if you own a dog. Immerse yourself in it & put your dog through the IQ test. Not only will you have fun putting your dog through it, you will also have fun putting the exercises together for your dog".

Stanley Coren is a credible source of information. He is well educated, has years of experience with dogs. It is not a novel, I consider it a reference book and the pages are well worn from use. I have sent it to several friends.
