As an Air Force officer for more than 8 years who's counseled far too many people about poor financial choices, this book's information would have saved all of them some very hard lessons learned. This book walks through the many ways to optimize your military pay and benefits, deployment CZTE, the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP), the military pension, and PCS season.
You should buy this book to chart your course to FI and then give it to a junior servicemember so they can do the same!
Overall, the book was similar to the total money makeover but got into a good discussion about what to do with investment accounts, military advantages to credit cards and tax free zones. Definitely a good, quick read that, as an officer, you can live your life by these principles and get your enlisted to do as well to help better their lives and futures.
Does this guide work for both officers and enlisted? The tagline is "An Officer's Guide to Personal Finance and Investing"
Short answer: Yes.
Longer answer: Yes. This book is about reaching Financial Independence, and it follows general personal finance and investing principles that apply to everyone. In basic terms, Financial Independence is when your assets are sufficient that you no longer need to work for a paycheck. There are many ways to get there (savings, investments, rental properties, pension, and/or a combination of these). Savings and investments play a large role for most people seeking FI. The greater percentage of your income you save, the quicker you can reach FI. So the only difference I can see between officers and enlisted is the potential ability for many officers to save a larger percentage of their income, simply because they earn more money (in general). Math is math, regardless of rank, and the principles work the same for everyone.
What else buyers need to know: This is a relatively short book, and can be read in the span of a couple hours. That said, don't let the length fool you. There is no fluff. This book is full of rock-solid information and works as a great guide to getting started. There are additional resources in the back where you can learn more information about Financial Independence, Investing, Military & Veteran Benefits, and more. Look at this book as a guide to get you started down the right path. Then jump into the additional resources to fine tune your understanding of more intricate topics.
