Editorial Reviews

Review

"Torgovnik is not a novelist. He is a photographer who deals with true stories. What he found in Rwanda, however, is that truth can strain the limits of one's imagination." --American Photo

"The images of the mothers and their children born of rape are both beautiful and shocking -- exquisite portraits of ordinary Rwandan women and their children and a reminder that the consequences of rape can be felt for generations." -- Louis Charbonneau --Reuters

"While Intended Consequences ever so carefully doses its measure of trauma and reconciliation, the portraits get into your bones rather than your brains." -- Cora Fisher --The Brooklyn Rail

Wow!
Bought it for the photos, loved it for the stories. As horrible as the stories are, it was quite a new experience for me to have a photography book which brings the story behind each photo. Don't get me wrong, it is a great phtography book, I loved the technique, the pictures are taken with such care and respect, and each one tells a different story. There's a line connecting them all, so compared to other books I have, I can say it felt more like listening to an album than to a collection.
I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in photography.

This is an amazing book. It is a little hard to hear the horrible stories but it also shows some amazing women. Even though I have never met these women, I can see the pain in the eyes of both the women and the children.

The use of rape as a weapon of war and politics is made possible by silence. This book has excellent photos and tells the stories of people who might never have been heard from. Highly recommended.
