Format: MP3 Music
This marvelous album is the fruit of over twenty years of musicianship, collaboration, and growth by the band Society Burning. The album is loaded with the ever-evolving DNA found throughout previous SoBu efforts, and it infects us even more deeply than ever on this outing. "Internal Combustion" is aptly named... unlike their previous albums, which (primarily) rage at and against the injustice and pains that exist in the world, this album is an internal battle of the soul. No doubt informed by more years of living through the trials of humanity, this battle also lends the album an additional maturity that takes it a step beyond all of their previous efforts -- the battle rages between the actuality of the imperfect nature of being human, and a rejection of the imperfection and desire to be "a better man" -- not to mention, who gets to say what imperfection is, anyway?

The album is divided into two logical pieces, separated by the tracks "Internal Combustion" numbers 01, 02, and 03. The persona of the album is largely torn apart in the first half, and then fights out to a satisfying catharsis in the second half resulting in a truce of sorts. Across the tracks, battle is done with internal demons painted not only lyrically, but also masterfully with the music itself. For instance, in "Nausea ad Nasuem", as the track winds down and the surrendering lyric "can't stop, so I'll go and do it again" is sung, the music itself surrenders and degenerates carefully into crafted digital de-sampled beauty (a subtext which is lacking in the fine Produkt remix on the Digipack CD). Every track uses the music as a subtext in some way to support the corresponding lyric.
