When I was 8 years old I remember sitting in my 3rd grade elementary school class very confused and bored out of my mind. I had no clue what the purpose of school was and better yet how it would help me in the future. I grew up in very poor neighborhood; Crown Heights, Brooklyn, New York. Schooling was just too much theory and not enough application.
After many years of struggles, I now have a very successful career in corporate America, I'm a successful business owner and bestselling author! I realize that having an entrepreneurial mindset; things had to be practical for me and traditional schooling is everything but practical! I love learning but I have to be honest I was very skeptical about International Bachelaureate system of education, but after giving the book a fair shot and reading it to the end I realize that anyone interesting in making education more practical would love this book.
This book is an excellent resource. The author, Thomas Baker, provides information that is relevant for anyone who is interested in the quality of education. Thomas Baker is non-partisan, he doesn't take sides a priori. After looking at both sides, he reaches a conclusion that the evidence available clearly indicates that the International Baccalaureate system of education is the best in the world. Whether you agree or disagree with his assessment of the International Baccalaureate, you are sure to find this book a well informed and well-researched, excellent resource. Baker's enthusiasm, in the end, is well justified based on the case studies he examines. I highly recommend this book for anyone with an interest in high quality education.Read more ›
I sometimes wish I could go back in time. I remember school. I was bored, eager for the bell, wanting to go out with friends at the end of my last class. I did not appreciate the gift of learning.
After reading this book on IB education, I believe that finally, the world is beginning to realise that equality and world standardisation in education is very important - and more - very necessary. Here is a quote from the book: the IB Diploma Programme gives students the knowledge, skills and attitudes that enables them to excel in university. The programme is well recognised by the world’s leading universities and truly prepares students for the working world”
What appeals to me is the fact that any student from any background in any country that runs this programme, has an EQUAL chance of success.
This book was very well put together, and as always, Mr Baker, sets the information out in understandable terms. His easy, relaxed way of giving an overall view of his subject is present in every educational book he writes, and I find that refreshing.
Well, reading this book was an eye-opener! I admit rushing to do a bit of a research afterwards, finding that Thomas Baker is not the only person who thinks the International Baccalaureate education system is the best in the world. The following quotation is from an IB educator in England: “...The MYP has transformed our approach to teaching and learning. It allows our teachers to teach courses which are genuinely stimulating, and focused on the expectations and aspirations of our students, and it allows our students to engage with a curriculum which
is rigorous, imaginative and interdisciplinary..." - oh yes, this is what is missing in our average school, the interaction, the personal approach to every student according to his or her abilities and inclinations, rather than the attempt to fit them all into one frame.
"... It is the best middle school program available in the world and I would urge all schools who are academically ambitious—for their staff and students—to introduce it as soon as they can. In doing so, not only will they best prepare students for further education, but also provide them with that unique, rounded perspective of ourselves and the world around us that IB students can have...” - says Dr Anthony Seldon, Master, Wellington College, Berkshire, UK.Read more ›
