The book is a compilation of 27 national case studies on educational reform in the 1980s. With very few exceptions, the editors and contributors are North American, and their views of international education seem to reflect this. Among the more extensive articles is one on the United States, written by the volume's editors, and clearly one of the best in the book. One would have hoped for more of the same. Concentration on governmental reform efforts and the nation-state arrangement are the two distinctive features of the handbook, although some of the information is already out of date due to recent political changes. Libraries owning either the ten-volume International Encyclopedia of Education (Pergamon, 1985) or The Encyclope dia of Comparative Education and National Systems of Education (Pergamon, 1988) will not need this. For larger education collections.
