Editorial Reviews

Review

International Relations has long been the best introduction to the field. It perfectly balances different theoretical approaches to international politics, theoretical and empirical material, and major topics like international security, international political economy, and global social issues. In particular, its coverage of war, civil conflict, and terrorism is outstanding and especially relevant today.”—Andrew Kydd, University of Wisconsin—Madison

“Students have realized that women–as factory workers, as peace activists, as political thinkers–need to be discussed in IR courses. Goldstein and Pevehouse’s up-to-the-minute, engaging introductory text responds to this need.”–Cynthia Enloe, Clark University

“Goldstein and Pevehouse have uniquely written a text that is a perfect fit not just for introductory international relations courses but also for multidisciplinary international studies courses. Better than anyone, they sensibly combine political science, economics, history, and more with plenty of illustrative regional examples to help my students build a comprehensive picture of the world.”–David Bearce, University of Colorado–Boulder

From the Back Cover

Readers will appreciate the author's ability to make the rich complexity of international politics accessible and exciting, using clear writing, an abundance of lively, relevant examples, and a highly praised map and photo program. The books has accessible coverage of classic and alternative theoretical approaches. Included a fourth level of analysis-the global level and has the strongest coverage of international political economy available in any book. The text's Companion Website and the Microsoft(r) Encarta(r) Interactive World Atlas CD-ROM are integrated with the book through Web and Atlas icons in the books margins. For those interested in International Relations. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This is probably the best International Relations (IR) text out there, and it is a good one too! IR is a hybrid and consequently very large field comprised of myriad sub-fields intersecting at various angles. This book makes sense of this confusion, and does so in an intellectually rigorous fashion.
The book is divided into two parts: International Security and International Political Economy. The chapters in these parts introduce the reader to such concepts as power politics, international law, trade, the environment, and the North-South Gap, to name a few.
It is a difficult task to sum up the entire field of IR, and Goldstein does not do this. I'm not sure it can be done. But what Goldstein does do is provide the introductory student with a solid grasp of the fundamentals of IR so that s/he can have a solid foundation from which to launch further inquiries.
Highly recommended.

Be careful when ordering. The used books or even the lesser-expensive alternative new books are different editions and really, different books. For instance, if you're not paying attention, instead of buying the 10th edition of "International Relations" you may find that you have bought "International Relations Brief, Update Edition (2nd Edition)" ... Amazon should clearly mark alternative editions.

Got the job done and arrived on time. The authors are clever, and kept me interested. I was supposed to have a more recent edition, but passed my course just fine with this one. (So, I guess there aren't many discrepancies between editions).

An outstanding text in introductory international relations. Gives very good coverage not only to security and power issues but also excellent coverage of international political economy and environmental issues as well. Also gives a short treatment of feminist interpretations of IR.

I needed a 10th edition book and decided to take my chances with the 9th. Why spend $150 when this lovely book was $4 and only a few years different? So happy I made that decision and look forward to using Amazon and this vendor for future purchases.

International relations is fascinating but this text is so dry it's hard to really get in to it. Seems more about skimming the surface so you can try to memorize tons of facts, instead of going in depth with anything to make it more meaningful.

The book has a great outline and format. The chapters all seem to be about 20 pages or so and are full of valuable up-to-date information that is easy to digest. However, there is LOTS of information, so I would suggest reading in chunks and/or note-taking to be sure to comprehend and absorb all the knowledge adequately.
