This comprehensive code comprises all building, plumbing, mechanical, fuel gas and electrical requirements for one- and two-family dwellings and townhouses up to three stories. The IRC contains many important changes such as: An updated seismic map reflects the most conservative Seismic Design Category (SDC) based on any soil type and a new map reflects less conservative SDCs when Site Class A, B or D is applicable. The townhouse separation provisions now include options for using two separate fire-resistant-rated walls or a common wall. An emergency escape and rescue opening is no longer required in basement sleeping rooms where the dwelling has an automatic fire sprinkler system and the basement has a second means of egress or an emergency escape opening. The exemption for interconnection of smoke alarms in existing areas has been deleted. New girder/header tables have been revised to incorporate the use of #2 Southern Pine in lieu of #1 Southern Pine. New tables address alternative wood stud heights and the required number of full height studs in high wind areas.

I paid $41... why it’s over double that now is beyond me. For a book offered by the ICC that is supposed to be used for 3 years, this is a huge disappointment. I bought it to stay current and to take my R3 Residential Plans Examiner exam...the book barely made it through using it to study and udderly fell apart during the frantic chapter/index flipping to verify first impression answers during the exam. Sections and pages falling out, I resorted to finishing off the failed binding and 3 hole punching the thing and using a ring binder. A 3 year book lasted 3 days and now referencing the information leads to the holes failing and more loose pages. I definitely got what I paid for but expected much more from the ICC endorsed product. (Did pass the exam though-so I’ll give it a star for that - its contents were accurate)

By law I have to have it with me on job sites, but it's pretty overpriced. Especially considering how often they are updated and must be replaced. In this day and age, having access to a PDF version (perhaps a subscription to keep up with updates?) seems as though it would be a more cost effective and functional solution.

I bought a few of these code books to make sure when I begin building my home, I will be in compliance. If your expecting plain English, and an easy understanding you can forget about that. I have a construction and mechanical background and it's tuff understanding exactly what they want. Look for zither book that explains the codes in better detail.

Less expensive than the last time I bought the book but there were misplaced chapters. (The book was bound wrong). Makes it a little difficult to figure out things when you have to figure out which chapter they filed stuff in.

And it smells like gasoline. Like it’s been sitting in some dudes garage. Makes it a little difficult to read unless you are in a well ventilated area. #rememberyourppe

The book is a code book - what can you say about the content. It is what it is. As someone who used the book on a daily basis - the binding has not held up to even a month or steady use. The book has come apart in sections and pages are falling out - is a pain to try and keep it held together. Would probably be best to just cut the binding off, drill or punch the pages and put in a 3-ring binder.
