Seminal survey text on this emerging field at the time it was written. Many of the precepts, new theories, and research methods are necessary to an understanding of where the field went subsequent to the 1950s and 60s.

Minor differences in where you live can have a huge impact on your social life. The canonical example was people living in a big apartment complex, with a courtyard. People in units facing into the courtyard were happy with many friends and stayed a long time. Units facing the exterior of the apartment complex had lonely people who moved away frequently. The happiest and socially best-connected person lived right by the mailboxes!

I didn't get to read the whole book but I was impressed with research results such as this.
