This book is for anyone who is concerned about the issues facing education today. American education as we know it is on the brink of collapse. Teachers are leaving, parents are haphazardly homeschooling, and racism and systemic injustice continue to be deeply ingrained within educational practices. Ms. Hawkins, through her unique life experiences, seeks to draw awareness to the issues surrounding education today and how children's lives can be negatively impacted by the decisions of adults and the systems they have created. Ms. Hawkins seeks to spark dialogue and awareness around the systems that are broken and to create the space needed for change within education. The future of our world depends upon it and our children are counting on us to give them a future of promise and hope.

The reason I only gave it three stars is because, while I agree with the conclusion, I disagree with her assessment that parents are a problem. Parents, naturally, are far more invested in their children than the teachers are. To say that parents shouldn't have a say, that we should sit down and get our granny panties out of a wad, is most definitely not the answer. For a better view of educational reform, for another view from another disgruntled teacher who left the profession for many of the same reasons Chandra listed, I recommend checking out John Taylor Gatto's works.
(Also, as an aside, the history of homeschooling isn't what she gave it as. It was not started by the right or the moral majority. It was started by more liberal parents who had many of the same complaints the later religious homeschoolers had about the public school system. Many of the same issues Chandra has, and I have.)
