Editorial Reviews
The Interstellar: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack is a tremendously popular soundtrack, several years after it's initial release. The Interstellar: Expanded Edition features music from the film by composer Hans Zimmer, and will be available on LP with special etching, CD, and digital formats; and features additional music that was not available on the standard CD and digital releases of the original soundtrack. . Zimmer is considered a rock star in the composing world, having toured the world - including performing at the Coachella festival last year. The list of awards he has won would easily fill a full page. His award highlights include: Academy Award winner; 4x Grammy Award winner, 2x Golden Globe winner, Tony Award winner, American Music Award winner, Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Board of Review, ASCAP's Henry Mancini Award for Lifetime Achievement, and BMI's Richard Kirk Award for lifetime achievement, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. A sample of Hans Zimmer’s 200+ film credits: Interstellar, The Lion King, the Pirates of the Caribbean series, Inception, Gladiator, Crimson Time, Dunkirk, The Dark Knight Trilogy.

The Music
Okay, let's get one thing straight first of all. Hans Zimmer's finest hour is likely this soundtrack. It's an homage to 2001:A Space Odyssey, an emotional, epic journey into the unknown, a visceral confrontation with despair and cowardice, and a heart-rending, gasping, grasping at the the limits of aural experience. I use the score to benchmark headphones, and I've watched person after person tear up and choke up after hearing this music through my best audio equipment. This is a MAGNIFICENT score, if imperfectly arranged.
The Master
Oh boy. Here we go. The rumors are true. You've never HEARD static on a brand new record until you've heard this. There's LOUD crackling static from the moment the music starts on the first disc. Not a static hum. CRACKLING. The LOUDEST I'VE EVER HEARD ON A NEW RECORD. But that's just the start. There's wobble, loud pops, and burst of static incredibly frequently. I've heard records 60 years old on cheap, thin vinyl for kids that sounded better than this after being stored in low quality paper, scratched to heck, then sold covered in dirt at Goodwill. For a brand new expanded set for a Hans Zimmer's finest score this is absolutely unacceptable. A new low bar has been set for audio mastering and this is a complete embarrassment. EVERYONE involved should be fired.
Presentation
No problem! Crappy audio quality? I'll just get it for the collectable goodies! The colored vinyl! The awesome artwork! The movie stills on every sleeve for all four records! Sorry. No. Wait...what????? Yeah, sorry to burst your bubble if you've been buying MONDO releases and come to expect something you would actually want to look at. This is plain black vinyl. No colors. No splotches. But wait! There's an etching! Just like my old STYX album there's this cool etching that you see as the vinyl spins! Sorry, nope. It's on a side with no music. Wait...what??? Four discs and an ENTIRE SIDE is BLANK??? Yup, so you can get a really REALLY lame etching (Morse Code). Bleh. And speaking of Morse Code...
Well at least I can tell which record is which and easily put on the one I want to when I want to hear specific music! No. Not unless you know Morse Code. Huh? Well you see the records aren't labeled "A", "B", "C" like a sane person would do. No, they're in Morse Code (dashes and dots). No other labels on any record. No tracks listed, no labels. Just dashes and dots. X(
Well, then I can tell by the individual record sleeves at least right? And I can gaze lovingly at the cool artwork! No. There ARE NO PICTURE SLEEVES! Just some PAPER (!) inner sleeves that are plain white paper. No labels. Even worse (is that possible?) they are STACKED together on each side. This is NOT a four gate-fold. It's a SINGLE gate-fold with TWO plain white sleeves on each side! And unlike every record I've ever seen in my entire life, the inside is NOT sealed. This means that the records and liner notes keep sliding out into the center. No prob, I'll just use some shoe goo to seal each side so the records don't fall out... So I can protect the awesome liner note artwor- Not so fast! It's just some composer notes in black and white. No great liner note artwork. Not even cardboard. Just a slip of paper. Lame.
Okay, so that leaves the single gatefold with it's awesome artwo- ... there's no great artwork is there? No. There isn't (I thought not). Granted, the BACK of the album has a nice picture. Real nice. Enjoy it. It's the only good picture. The inside? It's the same lame picture of the ship from the CD. The front? It's the same awful artwork from the DVD/Blu Ray. Yuck! That cover is so bad I printed out a teaser poster to replace it on my Blu Ray.
Overall
So there you have it! This should have been a BOX of goodies! It should have had a mini artbook, full liner note on thick paper, a quad gate-fold or four separate sleeves (one for each record) with art from the movie on both sides. It should have been mastered in super-clean high fidelity with full range and boosted volume (Wait! Didn't I mention it? How stupid of me! The volume is 30% lower than it should be and the sound is badly compressed). Every disc should have been protected with rice paper inner sleeves inside of the double-sided sleeves with pictures. There should have colored, splattered discs or at least etchings on both sides of every disc and the entire side of the last disc filled with music.
As it is...I can't recommend this to anyone except someone like me who either wants the entire score for really cheap on vinyl for the sake of collecting and to heck with the quality of the pressing...or someone just doesn't care about quality or collectability at all. This release is an embarrassment in every sense of the word. F- Hans Zimmer should be ashamed that his music is being released like this.
When receiving the package, I did notice that the list of tracks on the back did not have “No Time for Caution.” The package said that there were 12 tracks on the 2nd disc and I was a little confused, but sure enough when I popped it into my CD player, it showed 13 tracks. While the “No Time for Caution” track is not listed, it is most assuredly on there as the last track.
Hans Zimmer has quickly become my favorite modern-day composer. I own his soundtracks for all three of “The Dark Knight Trilogy,” “Inception,” “Man of Steel,” “Pirates of the Caribbean – The Curse of the Black Pearl” Not to mention thoroughly enjoying his work in so many other movies, as well. As far as this particular soundtrack – I think it is his most ambitious work yet. It certainly is one of the finest works he’s done in his career. To be approached by Christopher Nolan so early on in the film's production, it speaks volumes about his capabilities. Also, the fact that Nolan only gave a very vague premise of what the film he was doing equates an even more unhindered and even more inspired work by Zimmer. The use of the four-manual organ as the central emphasis makes this soundtrack so unique and truly one of the most aurally impressive soundtracks to date. I just can’t stop listening to this soundtrack.
As far as the packaging goes I don’t hate it, but I also don’t care for it all that much. The box is simply too big. I do like the minimalistic all-black hard casing, but again it is just too bulky. The illuminating star part of the package simply has too much wasted space. This is supposed to be the reason why this edition is so expensive, but it just does not appeal to me all. It is a cool little feature to have the light blinking in Morse code, but I don’t think I will open it up to see, purposefully, more than once or twice more.
Another neat bonus/feature that I am also enjoying is the Z+ Interstellar application voucher. Being able to put my headphones on and listen to the (standard) tracks in virtual 11.1 surround sound is very cool. According to Hans Zimmer, it is the closest way we are able to listen to his soundtracks like he experiences them when he mixes them. It’s just too bad that it’s only the standard tracks. I am hopeful that the DTS Headphone X technology will become more mainstream as it is a very cool way to listen. *Side Note* There are a few soundtracks that have Z+ apps associated with it and there is currently only one movie that has the movie (blu-ray) mixed for DTS Headphone X, which is “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1.”
However, the real reason I got this edition is for the extra tracks on the 2nd disc, and that is likely the only reason you would consider it, as well. Is it worth the extra money? The packaging is not, but for purists, fans of the soundtrack, and those who want the “complete” works, it probably is. Granted some of the tracks on the 2nd disc seem like extended versions of tracks on 1st disc, I still find them uniquely enjoyable to listen to. I don’t mind that I paid a hefty premium; I bought it so I can enjoy Hans Zimmer’s best work on my home stereo in full uncompressed quality.
1) The return by date and actual delivery date were the same day. How is that supposed to work?
2) The CD was sold in a plastic jewel case, but shipped in a thin, poorly padded Amazon Prime "bubble" envelope. It may have had bubbles at some point in the past, but no bubbles remained. With no pressure, the envelope was only 0.08 inch thick, but easily compresses to 0.03 inch. Consequently, the jewel case arrived cracked and broken.
3) It was delivered by UPS, which used to be a first-rate service with excellent tracking. According to the tracking information, my package arrived two days after purchase at the UPS facility that's less than 10 minutes from my home. Instead of going "Out for delivery" the next day, it was shipped to another UPS facility over 35 miles away where it spent a day. It was then shipped back to the original UPS facility the next day (the original "arrive by" day), where it remained for the next two days before becoming "Out for delivery." This does not exactly meet the promised "Prime" delivery time.

This set is a great reminder of that incredible evening. It also has the additional disc with material that was not included on the single disc addition, including "No Time For Caution" from the amazing docking sequence. It also features demo versions of the main theme. The lights in the box and the book make this a great package, and an excellent gift for any fan Christopher Nolan films and the incredible Hans Zimmer.
But it now!!
The music itself is extremely good - i preferred it to the film which, despite trying to be clever with the physics overlooked how anyone could walk around normally with gravity many many times greater than on earth - a blindingly obvious point (and I am no physicist).
Besides the various criticisms on different versions of the soundtrack (regular, Deluxe, Illuminated Star Projection Box, etc.), Illuminated Star Projection Box is the most complete one you can find if you're after a collector's edition (and actually most of the movie's music pieces!). Although unlisted, the track "No Time for Caution" aka the Docking Scene is indeed included, and is #13 on CD2.
What a shame that the marketing, from throwing different versions to the packaging itself, has done a poor job. The paste used for the battery pack of the projection box was of a low quality, and had already come loose during shipment. Fortunately the functionality is not affected and I can paste it again, but I expected a better assembly for something considered a collector's or Deluxe.
Regarding the Z+Interstellar app, note that even for those who pay through IAPs, only the music on the regular CD is there and unfortunately CD2 - containing the "Docking Scene" - is not among the high quality files, which are around 400MBs worth of download and storage (one could assume they are lossless). It's also worth mentioning that: 1) You can only use the included voucher ONCE and on only one device, meaning that activation on your for example phone doesn't mean you have access to the files also in your tablet. So choose carefully on which one of your devices you activate the voucher. 2) You need a high quality headphone, possibly with an amplifier depending on your headphone, as well as a device with good-enough performance to fully enjoy the Z+app version of the scores. Moreover, check you've got enough storage space in your device, because deleting the files and re-installation or re-activation later is not possible. (at least this is the warning I got from the website when I was activating the voucher). If your device is rooted, you could try backing up the app WITH data, which includes the files, using a good back up app like Titanium Backup, and try restoring the whole (app+data) later, but I personally haven't tested this to know whether it works or not, so again: choose your device carefully!
Thank you Christopher and Hans, awesome job as always [double thumbs-up]
the cods are very tightly packed together so have to be careful on taking them out. the back cover has left marks on the back of the box due to the glue holding it on ...why they do this on cardboard i will never know..
