Format: Hardcover
This beautiful book contains some of the very finest poems of Pablo Neruda with translations by the esteemed Alastair Reid that seem pitch-perfect. The typography and layout of this bilingual edition are particularly well done; it is a pleasure to read the poems in the evocative original Spanish and then discover how Reid has rendered the words in English.

What really distinguishes this book, however, are the images of paintings by Mary Heebner that accompany the text. Each superb image is a kind of counterpoint or harmonic compliment to the sentiments expressed in the poems.

This is a book that is a pleasure to possess and to return to frequently. It would make a wonderful gift to a friend.

This book was on the new book table in a bookstore in Sebastopol, Ca. It was almost my birthday. I saw it and it was mine. I hardly knew what it was at first. I think we should give ourselves the gifts of fine books when they come and knock us over! This one did. Immediately it became a birthday gift from my husband who saw I loved it and bought it for my birthday. A perfect gift for a lover or dear friend, complimented as it is by the wonderful abstract washes by Mary Heebner. I was drawn by the image, by the design of the cover, and then, only afterwards by the content. Sometimes you may wonder why book covers have such a draw, but with this book it is easy to figure out. The sensuous mysterious and richly earthy tones of the paintings, their very vagueness, the perfect foil for poetry. Poem and image work together to engage your whole being. Horray for a wonderful and successful book. I am looking forward to the next one.

This is a book that stands out on the bookshelf. I love to come home and see this beautiful book on my table. It is always available to be read and seen, to enjoy Neruda's poetry and wonder at Mary Heebner's magnificent paintings. Even better, this is a bilingual edition and suits those who know Spanish or want to know.

This and the companion book, Poems of the Sea, contain magnificent poems by Pablo Neruda, well translated by Alistair Reid, and with stunning illustrations by Mary Heebner. A must by for any Neruda lovers. I have many Neruda poetry books by many great translators (W.S. Merwin in my favorite) but these two books are just impeccably beautiful visually.
