First of all, I LOVE Barrios' music. I've listened to quite a few versions of it, including the CD-restored versions of Barrios' own recordings. Many players seem to get an idea in mind of how to play/interpret Barrios; then, play much of it fairly similarly.

THIS is different ... at times fanciful, at times folksy, at times formal. But, the interpretations just sound appropriate. If one listens to this, quietly and intently, it seem like it would sound in the mind of a person who lived their life in the culture of Barrios' native land.

If you haven't heard Berta Rojas play Barrios, you have yet to enjoy many facets of Barrios' music. Don't hesitate on this CD; it's terrific.

Sure. Segovia could play a little and was ahead of his time. But he sure was no Barrios with compositions and creativity - although sharp and a major force for sure. Still, Segovia sure isn't the king of the classical guitar. For him to call John Williams the prince of the guitar is merely empty words. The truth is that John Williams is the King of the Classical Guitar - by a mile. I play a little and have heard many of the greats out there. There is only one John Williams. He is absolutely the best classical guitar player of the 20th century and maybe even the 21st when all is said and done. Nobody is better. The sound that he gets from his instrument is tops. His technique is tops. His feeling is tops. His dynamic range is tops. The way he plays Bach cannot be approached by anybody. That being said, I was annoyed at first when listening to Berta Rojas play Barrios. I was looking for another potential King and wanted more of a driving tempo. But what I found instead was a Queen. Truly, here we have a Queen. As I gave it time and let it sink in I realized that she has given a lovely performance! Beautifully done! Intimate Barrios by Berta Rojas is worthy to stand by John Williams rendition as a Queen taking her place by a King. Barrios even from heaven is smiling. Don't miss this great music by these two great artists. Barrios will be brought to life before you - now rightfully taking his place as the greatest guitar composer of all time.

She is probably among the best South American guitar music artists in our generation. It's rare to have such combination of technical competence and musicality in a single performer. Her interpretation of Barrios is beautifully 'native' and genuine. The music flows; the guitar sings; and just the technical perfection will leave any listener in awe. Highly recommended.

I too am a college trained classical guitar player for decades and play many of the pieces in the recording. That adds much of my deep appreciation to her talent and musicality. It doesn't get any better than this!

Berta's recording of Barrios deserves the highest accolades. I can't say it much better than the Classical Guitar Magazine already did by comparing her playing with Williams and David Russell. Berta definitely feels this music and makes it fresh again. Highly recommended. By the way, I am not sure if she is playing her Robert Ruck guitar on this recording or the Michael O'Leary, but she can get some beautiful sounds out of it.

Berta Rojas is a fabulous guitarist and the best interpreter of Barrios' music I have ever heard. The music seems to be in her blood. John Williams and David Russell play very well, as one might expect, but don't compare in sensitivity to Berta Rojas. This CD is a must have for lovers of the guitar.

Berta Rojas is the best classic guitarist of our generation. She transports you to her country of Paraguay. This album features the music of her countryman, Agustin Barrios who was a romantic and a composer of beautiful pieces that sing to the heart like poetry!

Paraguayan composer and guitarrist Agustin Barrios(1885-1944)
along with the Mexican Manuel Ponce and the Venezuelan Antonio Lauro(1917-1986) are among the best guitarrist composers of Latin-America. Barrios called himself "A true brother of the troubadors", and gave himself the name Mangore, after a Guarani indian chief. The present recording includes music by Barrios, some of it has come down to us by manuscripts, and others only by old recordings of the composer himself playing his own music.Berta Rojas does a wonderful job.

My respect for Berta Rojas, she is an incredibly good interpreter of the compositions of Agustin Barrios. She brought a piece Paraguay into our European home.
