I read the reviews and the sample. I thought I knew what I was buying. First let me say I hate stupid heroines. And Cassie is the dumbest character I have ever read. She goes to mexico, but is suprised that Rio carries a gun. She says she is scared but walks around town oblivious. I think it is too much the reader to think a doctor could be so selfish and stupid.Everyone she meets tells her about the danger. I quit reading at 62% she was snippy and mean during the sex scenes. I guess the author wanted a strong fearless character but it didn't come across that way for me

Joan Swan can write a bad boy. As with Teague in Fever, Rio in Intimate Enemies is a questionable hero at first and I personally find that soo hot :)

Cassie Christo is on forced leave from her residency due to still being traumatized over the death of her mother and step-brother six months before. She returns to the home she grew up in Mexico with the sole purpose of proving that her step-father is a evil man and to get him out of her mother's home. What she doesn't expect to find is the man that helped her at her mother's funeral when she had a complete breakdown and who she still hadn't been able to forget working for her step-father.

Rio is a undercover agent for ICE and has been on the job with Cassie's family for over a year. He also has never forgotten Cassie from six months ago and finds himself still strongly attracted to her but they are so close to finally bringing down the network that her step-father is involved in that he wants nothing more than for Cassie to go home for his own sanity and her safety.

The author did a fantastic job of showing the seedy life that goes on in Baja from gangs to human trafficking rings to terroristic activities.

Cassie doesn't know for most of the book that Rio is undercover. She has a gut feeling that there is more to him than he is telling her but that still doesn't stop her attraction and seduction of him.

The author did a great job of pulling the reader into this seedy world and taking us on a crazy ride with Cassie on finding out what is really going on. On a personal note I have to say when Rio finally tells Cassie his last name I found both that scene and his actual last name so hot. :)

Excellent start to a new series and I cannot wait for the next.

Joan Swan has done it again! She's created fiery sparks that rival FEVER and then surpasses it.

Danger is the name of the game in Ensenada, Mexico. Cassie Christo has more than warring gangs and kidnapping threats to worry about. She has more to worry about than the unknown threat her stepfather, Saul Flores, has made to get rid of her permanently if Rio Santana doesn't keep her under control. Her greatest danger is falling in love with a man who she doesn't know, who won't tell her the truth, and who she doesn't trust yet she craves more than water in the dry desert.

INTIMATE ENEMIES is gritty, action-packed from the first page to the last, and sexier than anything before it. Joan Swan has topped herself which honestly I doubted she could do after FEVER - that book gave me such a Teague Creek addiction that I read it twice in one month! INTIMATE ENEMIES is even better than FEVER - the danger that surrounds Rio crackles and snaps creating more heat than even Teague Creek. I've definitely got Rio addiction now.

INTIMATE ENEMIES by Joan Swan is writing at its best. It's romance at its steamiest. It's action and suspense that will have you holding on for dear life while Joan takes you on the ride of your life through danger lurking behind every next page. She picks you up and sets you down in the hot, dry desert air that surrounds you constantly except when she allows you a brisk breeze floating in from the ocean. You almost feel the hot Mexican sun, the sounds of the marina and the smell of enchiladas cooking at Miguel's. You feel the pain of loss, the pain of need and the pain that comes on with the danger that ensues. I can't say enough because INTIMATE ENEMIES by Joan Swan has to be read to be experienced. Simply said: INTIMATE ENEMIES is brilliant.

INTIMATE ENEMIES (Covert Affairs #1) by Joan Swan

INTIMATE ENEMIES is the first storyline (released June 2012) in Joan Swan's Covert Affairs series.

Rio Santana is an under cover officer so deep in Saul Flores' organization that he is now considered his number one man. But it is the return of Saul's step-daughter Cassie that will throw a major twist into the sting operation that has been in the works for over a year. On stress leave from her position as an emergency room physician, Cassie will embark on a series of investigations that will compromise Rio's work and put both of them at risk.

Cassie Christo is Saul Flores' step daughter. Back in Baja Mexico to stand before the parole board to ensure that the man who, three years previous, had attempted to rape her, Cassie still grieves for the mother (Alejandra) she lost six months earlier in a fatal yacht fire that also claimed the life of her step-brother Santos. And Cassie has other reasons for her return-as the sole owner of her mother's lands, house and financial assets, Cassie is working to prove that Saul's is using her mother's money for illegal operations.

When Saul suspects that Cassie is attracted to Rio, he demands that Rio make Cassie a part of his job. As bodyguard and go-between for Saul's current illegal operations, Rio must make a choice whether to pursue Cassie in the name of business or protect her from her step-father's hatred in the name of love.

Rio and Cassie's relationship faces many ups and downs, especially when Rio is unable to reveal his true identity and purpose within Saul's business plans.
