There were moments in this book I wanted to smack Dwayne in the head and shake the hell out of Brooke. How could she not see how much Dwayne loved her over the past 17 years even with him going through woman like crazy? Once the brothers showed up I literally could not put this book down. Yep, the book I put down after only 17% became the book I could not get enough of!!!
DC’s characters are intriguing, a bit mysterious and sexy as hell. Luke Gonzalez grabbed my heart from the minute he showed up and has turned into my new obsession. Chris Gonzalez has something mysterious revolving around him and I’m looking forward to reading his book next.
So … When you pick up this book and you really should, don’t be afraid to get past the 17% read mark. You will not be disappointed.
Brooke is Dwayne's best friend, has been since kindergarten. Dwayne has wanted more from Brooke for for just as long, but he stayed back, watched as she fell in love, got married, had a child, and stood by her when that marriage fell apart. So when Brooke's 17year old daughter, Hailey goes missing, Dwayne steps up, both as Brooke's best freind, and as a Detective in the Nyack police deptartment, trying to shut down a drug ring at Hailey's school. Things take a turn for the worst when they discover just what and who Hailey has got mixed up in. But through it all, Dwayne is right there, by Brooke's side. Something changes along the way, and Dwayne makes it known what he wants, WHO he wants. Will Brooke give in, or will she hold Dwayne's past against him?
This is book two in the series, the Empire Blue Series, and I have not read book one, Intimate Danger. This will go on my wish list though. I did not feel I missed out on anything, but just because I wanna read it!
BECAUSE I LOVED THIS!
The right amount of history, both for Dwayne and Brooke. The right amount of now. The right amount of danger, of passion, of being kept on your toes, of falling in love, falling out, and of making up again. We get to hear from both Brooke and Dwayne, but also Hailey, as she spirals downwards, and we hear from Luke, Dwayne's younger brother, as he attempts to save Hailey, all the time fighting with himself. These Gonzales boys are amazing! They pull together when one of their own is threatened, and lets be honest here, Brooke, and by extension, Hailey, is one of their own. As Hailey puts it, Brooke and Dwayne have been pussy-fotting it around each other for years!Read more ›
Emotions run high when Brooke's daughter, Hailey fails to come home after a date. Brooke falls apart, understandably so, however I was shocked that she did not reach out for help sooner. Dwayne is her best friend and has been a father figure for Hailey growing up. Why would she not call him immediately. That is the only part of this story I had strong disagreement with. Dwayne has deep feelings for Brooke, which he has hidden very well from Brooke. Those feelings come to the forefront as the story progresses. Brooke realizes she wants more from Dwayne as well.
Dwayne has several brothers, tho they are all adopted they have very strong family ties. They are all in some kind of public protection field, which is very handy in tracking down Hailey's whereabouts. I loved the suspense and angst that this book throws at you. I was devastated by what Hailey was forced to endure at the hands of her boyfriend, someone she trusted, until it was too late.
I am looking forward to reading more from DC Stone. The brothers have stories coming, I can feel it. :)
“I received a copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review”.
I respected Brooke’s attachment to her daughter; it being nothing more than a loving mother trying desperately to raise and protect her offspring. Although Hailey’s father is long gone, she’s always had a father in Dwayne, and he’s played the part to a T. The strong connection between the trio is based on what he has with his adoptive family, and they, too, love the red-headed look-alike duo. Despite Dwayne’s love for Brooke, he’s lead a full life as a bachelor, although no one has ever caught her attention the way she does.
Stone played it safe, but not boring, I’m glad to say, with the circumstances surrounding Hailey’s kidnapping. I must admit, for a moment I feared I’d have to put the book down, but she made the story more than readable, without taking away from the believability. The relationship between Brooke and Dwayne switched gears amid the turmoil, but their connection didn’t take anything away from the mother’s love for or determination to bring her daughter home. There were heartwarming shifts between Brooke’s love for the two most important people in her life, and not one time do they look bad for exploring their relationship under the circumstances. This couldn’t have been an easy fete, so most definitely, I give Stone kudos.
From beginning to end, the story is captivating and held my attention like a gambler during a lottery draw, and I’m glad to say, I came out a big winner!
