A forgotten masterpiece

The previous reviewers are entirely correct that one must correspond with the bookseller to determine which volume is for sale.

My review pertains to the hardbound 1926 edition. Vol. 2 contains an index covering the first two volumes, and vol. 4's index covers the last two volumes.

It seems to me that the editor, Prof. Seymour, is so favorably disposed to Col. House he has written a hagiography. The careful historian would be wise to consult second and third opinions of House and his era but giving Seymour the benefit of the doubt that editing of the papers has been evenhanded and House's papers not altered after the fact to make him look good, I would conclude that House was one of the most able and prescient statesmen this country ever produced. The writing is NOT dry---this is a book you will take to bed with you and read avidly until you fall asleep. It is a terrific window into the perfect storm of events which derailed the course of the entire twentieth century. I have a special interest in the origins of WW I and have long been puzzled why the combatants did not make peace as soon as the conflict stagnated into positional warfare. House's penetrating insight into national character, shameful ulterior motives, and the inadequacies of the diplomats make everything clear. These papers are not only invaluable additions to the voluminous literature in that area, they are a heartbreaking account of how the conflict distracted Pres. Wilson from progressive domestic policies.

It's a good book, discussing one of the most interesting figures of American history. Col. Edward Mandell House was a close friend and advisor to President Woodrow Wilson. He never had any official position or accepted pay for his work for the government. In Wilsons first term House was responsible for guiding legislation on federal income tax, free trade and the creation of the Federal Reserve banking system. After that he acted as a direct mediator between the President and European officials embroiled in WWI. NOTE: This edition (1926) is a 4-volume set, but there is no way to easily discover this as each volume is marked only by a * on the spine; none of the volumes have any other indicator so it is hard to know which volume or set of volumes is being offered by Amazon third-party sellers. Volume 1 (*) through Volume 4(****) complete the set. Seems like many offers listed here are for 1 or 2 parts of the set, so inquire before buying.
