Book overview

Explore the history and cultural impact of a groundbreaking television show adored by old and new fans alike: Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Over the course of its seven-year run, Buffy the Vampire Slayer cultivated a loyal fandom and featured a strong, complex female lead, at a time when such a character was a rarity. Evan Ross Katz explores the show’s cultural relevance through a book that is part oral history, part celebration, and part memoir of a personal fandom that has universal resonance still, decades later.

Katz—with the help of the show’s cast, creators, and crew—reveals that although
Buffy contributed to important conversations about gender, sexuality, and feminism, it was not free of internal strife, controversy, and shortcomings. Men—both on screen and off—would taint the show’s reputation as a feminist masterpiece, and changing networks, amongst other factors, would drastically alter the show’s tone.

Katz addresses these issues and more, including interviews with stars Sarah Michelle Gellar, Charisma Carpenter, Emma Caulfield, Amber Benson, James Marsters, Anthony Stewart Head, Seth Green, Marc Blucas, Nicholas Brendon, Danny Strong, Tom Lenk, Bianca Lawson, Julie Benz, Clare Kramer, K. Todd Freeman, Sharon Ferguson; and writers Douglas Petrie, Jane Espenson, and Drew Z. Greenberg; as well as conversations with
Buffy fanatics and friends of the cast including Stacey Abrams, Cynthia Erivo, Lee Pace, Claire Saffitz, Tavi Gevinson, and Selma Blair.

Into Every Generation a Slayer Is Born engages with the very notion of fandom, and the ways a show like Buffy can influence not only how we see the world but how we exist within it.

Review

One of Bustle's Best Books of March 2022

"Evan has produced the definitive feast for
Buffy Buffs!"―Andy Cohen

"Evan Ross Katz has jumped into the world of
Buffy in a way no one ever has before. I’m in awe of the way Evan loves Buffy, cares about Buffy, and writes about Buffy. Each chapter reignited my love for the show in a new kind of way. This book is a deep dive and a love letter and a brilliant reminder that a good piece of art can live on far past a series finale.” ―Kiernan Shipka

“This incisive deep dive into
Buffy the Vampire Slayer delves into the stories behind the groundbreaking television show. Evan Ross Katz, through an impressive array of interviews with the show’s cast, creators, crew, and notable self-proclaimed stans—Stacey Abrams is the first fan we hear from—explores the cultural impact of this beloved show without skirting away from its shortcomings. Katz lovingly and shrewdly unpacks the very meaning of fandom, Buffy’s long-lasting influence on its fans, pop culture, and academia. It is a perfect read for anyone interested in pop culture, and of course lovers of the ever-iconic Slayer.”―Oprah Daily

"As someone who didn't watch Buffy until meeting Evan, his fandom, understanding, and total embrace of the nuance and complexities of the show ravages this book, and turns a chambré viewer into a fangirl. His writing is fresh, and so are his perspectives—through reading, you contemplate the series through his eyes and discover new vantage points through anecdotes from those orbiting the Buffy universe. Not only is the show iconic, so is this author."―
Christopher John Rogers

“Katz approaches the show’s cultural relevance and universal appeal with love and criticism, delivering an oral history that any staple of pop culture would be thankful to have…. [W]ell-researched…. Truly, no stone feels unturned.”―
Paper Mag

“The first reported
Buffy the Vampire Slayer book is a loving critique of a complicated show. Evan Ross Katz excavates Buffy's legacy—including the Joss Whedon allegations—through new interviews with the cast, crew, and fans like Stacey Abrams…. The show had hardly any characters of color, and fewer still that were fleshed out or appeared in more than a handful of episodes. Ross Katz’s book offers as much of a corrective as is possible all these years later, featuring interviews with Black supporting actors and guest stars like Bianca Lawson, who played the slayer Kendra in three episodes of the show….Into Every Generation doesn’t answer the question of whether it’s possible to separate the art from the artist, but it does love—and lovingly critique—the art without letting the artist off the hook.”―Jezebel

“In Evan Ross Katz’s
Into Every Generation a Slayer Is Born, the show’s influence and legacy gets the in-depth exploration it so richly deserves."―Bustle

Into Every Generation is a loving, comprehensive telling of the arc of the series, and well as a study into its glories and failures."―AV Club

“[A] tantalizing and thoroughly engaging tome….Though much has been written about the seminal show, fans who are wrestling with the fallout of Whedon's behavior will find new information here, along with a celebration of many significant ways
Buffy the Vampire Slayer shaped the culture and provides solace and inspiration to many of its fans. A loving look at an influential show….[fans] will adore this accessible and juicy read.”―Booklist (starred)

“[An] entertaining debut… Katz movingly reflects [on] the show…. Still, he doesn’t shy away from problematic issues… sharply critiquing its lack of racial diversity as well as abuse allegations about its writer….Mixing keen cultural analysis, wit, and an obsessive’s zeal, this will have fans riveted.”―
Publishers Weekly

“[
Into Every Generation a Slayer Is Born] is entertaining, impassioned and carries Katz’s acute critical eye.”―CoolHunting.com

“A
must-read for any Buffy fanatic."―TooFab

“We can’t emphasize enough how you need to get your hands on a copy….Dozens of heartwarming, heartbreaking & enlightening personal perspectives on their experiences during the shows' runs and the impact it continues to have on them today.”―
BleedingCool.com

"Organized at first around the chronological progression from mediocre action flick to a season-by-season breakdown, the book is interspersed with asides and witticisms that entertain as well as bridge themes and interweave facts. The later section, about controversies and legacies, is approached with skill and empathy. Katz’s writing captures his own voice so well that his audiobook narration is pitch-perfect."

I gave this book a five out of five stars, because Evan Ross Katz definitely deserves it. He covered every single possible angle of every single subject matter pertaining to what is possibly, no definitely, the best show ever. This is the best book I have ever read about Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Having said that, the cautionary saying, "Never meet your idols," is entirely appropriate here.
There were things that I Iearned about certain cast members that had me cringing and doing my famous Jessica Jones Eye Roll (look it up in GIFs). Again, this was because of the incredible job Katz did on being incredibly responsible with information.
So, be prepared. You might not like everything you read here, but if you're a fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, you need to know these things.

I wasn't sure if I was going to enjoy this book. I feared the author was going to write a book about the making of the show that only trashed Whedon. Whedon deserves trashing but we have to enjoy, not enjoy, critique the show honestly. I've seen website writers trash the show only in light of Whedon's issues. Anyway, the author does a very good job. Many interesting interview tidbits. Chapters 5 - 11 discuss each season and i didn't find these summaries tedious at all. The author gives added value to discussion of the subject. I do think he doesn't always get things right though. In "The Caucasian Persuasion" chapter, page 259, he makes a claim about Willow's blindness to her white privilege. She has been fighting with Tara and is in a bad mood. They are supposed to be attending a multicultural fair. In her bad mood she pouts "I don't feel real multicultural right now." That is just her saying she doesn't feel like going out! It doesn't mean the character is subconsciously opting out of multiculturalism because she is white!! The writers chose a multicultural fair ( very specific subject) because not
"feeling multicultural" isn't what Willow meant. She was feeling upset over a fight with her girlfriend.

One thing I have always loved about Buffy was the inclusivity. Each storyline was universal, complex and faceted so there was always something to relate to. Pretty amazing for a dark teen fantasy. I still go back and rewatch the full series in my 50s, and I enjoy keeping up with the cast and marveling that the show has maintained its kindness, complexity and relevance for decades. That said, the book seems to be written by a catty eighth grader who uses language that may be current colloquialisms, like "skeez," what does that even mean? Is the book supposed to only appeal to kids? As someone with a BA in English Lit, this book seems amateurish. Also, the author uses the book as a political platform, which was disappointing. Buffy was a place you could go to get lost in the world of the show, to forget about current events, to explore the characters without prejudice. The author begins with an eight page interview with politician Stacey Abrams, and on page 20 claims the movie starring Kristy Swanson failed in part due to Swanson who "turned out to be some crazy Trumper," adding a footnote that states she had a misspelling in a Tweet. Why does the author feel compelled to call out and bully Swanson? Trump wasn't even a political figure when the movie or TV show came out, so this seems like irrelevant cattiness that has nothing to do with the subject. Seems like the author has some personal problems, hate, bitterness and a political bias that makes him compelled to insert his personal politics into discussions of a show that was inclusive and largely apolitical. It is very disappointing to read this and makes the book hard to take seriously as the author taints the subject with his own politics. Buffy should be for everyone to escape to, enjoy, love and relate to, without political campaigns or bullying remarks by the author.

The book is presented as being part oral history, part critical analysis and part fan notes. Unfortunately it misses the mark in all of those areas. The book starts after its prologue with an interview with Stacey Abrams who is a big fan of the show. It was a bit surprising to start the book with that but why not ? Stacey has a personal connection with Sarah Michelle Gellar and also has (had?) one with Whedon. I also chuckled a bit when seeing that no questions about Whedon recent controversies had been asked to Stacey. The second part which takes around half of book is a partial summary of the seven seasons of the show. If you have seen the show (and if you haven’t I don’t see why you would read this book first which has many spoilers) you don’t really need this summary.. But the worst is that this part is really messy and in dire needs of an editor, There are some typos and some sentences are clearly off. Maybe some of those issues are linked to the fact that the book was « rebooted » after Carpenter’s allegations but still it was sometimes difficult to read. There is a lot of self inserting by the author Evan who kept giving his opinion on everything and it doesn’t bring anything new to the table. (Ironically the author has a podcast called « Shut Up Evan » which is exactly what I wanted to yell when reading this part) What was a lot better were the numerous interviews with cast and crews sharing many interesting details. Special mention to Danny Strong and Marc Blucas who are two actors we don’t hear about often enough. Unfortunately to find those interesting bits you have to navigate through Evan endless babbling. Then come the chapter « The Joss of it all«  which summarized the recent allegations against Whedon and the cast reaction on social media. This don’t give much additional knowledge if you have read the article from Variety. The following chapters taclkle important subjects like race issue or feminism. Those are tough but really important subjects to discuss and the way it was done was a big disappointment. You can’t just look at a show which started 25 years ago with 2021’s googles. It is really critical in order to do a meaningful analysis to first recontextualize properly. For example by looking at what was done for other shows which aired at the same period. Instead of that we got unknown people called « fans » who gave their opinions I didn’t care about and an author who was a lot more interested with pushing his narrative and virtue signaling than doing a proper analysis. Again some cast members interviews were really good but few and far between. It seems that Evan sometimes also tries to emulate Buffy snappy comeback from the show when doing some of his remarks but unlike the show it usually fails flat. The remaining chapters raised a bit more the level with a one full of fanboy gushing towards Sarah Michelle Gellar. It could probably have been done a bit more professionally but I think it was needed as I have the feeling that Sarah didn’t always get the credits she deserved for her wonderful work on Buffy. By gathering all those testimonies of people who worked with Gellar, Evan really delivered on this topic. The last chapter shared some interesting facts like some insight on the rumored Boreanaz/Brendon feud. Nonetheless I was a bit surprised that for all the time spent on Whedon’s controversies some others like the one with Jeff Pruitt/Sophia Crawford or Hannigan claiming that she learned about the end of Buffy in Entertainement Weekly were completely ignored in the book. To conclude I was really frustrated by this book. Between the fact that the book came after Carpenter’s allegation and the fact that the author is close to SMG, this book had the potential to really bring something new and fresh compared to the numerous books already written about the show. Instead we got this one which is not without any merits but full of bias and impaired by its sloppy writing and structure. It would have been a lot better and more interesting to just have all the interviews unedited instead of all this bloat. So it’s one star for some really interesting interviews and a second one for all the SMG’s love.
