Adrienne Giordano is spreading her wings like never before with her latest release INTO THE FIRE, and man did she soar! Her voice has always been strong and relatable in the romance and quirky mystery stories I've read by her over the years and that stands true in this book as well, but with an added level of an almost a journalistic quality. Her characters have heart and let it show through, but the detailed renditions of the crime scene, the aftermath and the investigation makes her reader feel like they've stepped back in time to physically be in the midst of the fire themselves. Her character development was great, the setting and follow through of this horrific fire was amazing and overall I couldn't have loved this story more.
RaeLynn caught my attention from the first page when the depth of her yearning to tell this story came through instantly. She's upbeat and dedicated, but was sensitive and caring towards Rose's pain. I enjoyed her character.
Rose was a spitfire and only made the reader wish we could have lived her life with her along the way. She was a joy to watch and my heart went out to her as secrets begin to unravel that change the past she lived.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves the solving of a cold case and unraveling of a powerful mystery.

From the Author
The story behind the story...
Some projects are intensely personal. This is one of them.
My co-author is my cousin, Mary Jo Briscione. I come from a large Italian family where I'm "the baby". Mary Jo was the oldest of the cousins, making her twenty years my senior. The benefit for me was that from a very young age, MJ showed me that women had powerful voices. She was fiercely independent and outspoken at a time when it wasn't exactly popular for women to be that way. As a kid, I dreamed of living a life like Mary Jo. She traveled, she worked, she was active in the teacher's union and fought hard for her fellow educators. Her influence taught me to imagine life beyond what I knew. It's a gift I will forever be thankful for. She was, in short, my person.
Five years ago, MJ lost her battle with pancreatic cancer. Losing her devastated us. During her last days, I was sitting with her and she told me she'd always wanted to be a writer. She'd been such a large part of my life and we'd talked often about my dream of being an author, but she'd never shared her own desire to write. She even had a project she'd been working on. Unfortunately, she hadn't gotten to finishing it. She directed me to her nightstand, where she kept research on a hotel fire from 1986.
She'd wanted to do a retrospective on the event and had pages of hand-written notes and copies of newspaper and magazine articles. The amount of work she'd done stunned me. That's when an idea hit me. In all the times she'd talked me out of funks, offered advice and generally helped me get out of my own way, I'd never had the opportunity to do something for her that would truly be meaningful.
At least not yet.
I suggested that I use her research to write a novel about a fictitious hotel fire and list us as co-authors. She liked that idea. In fact, what she'd said was (and I can still picture her giant smile) "That would be great."
We spent time over the next few days roughing out ideas. The original fire involved union workers, and she asked if we could add that in. She wanted the sleuth to be an older woman with a fabulous life. Think Auntie Mame, she'd said. Also, there'd been a Secret Service agent who had died in the original fire. He'd been investigating a counterfeiting ring. MJ thought that was interesting, so could I add the Secret Service in? Then there was an entertainer she'd heard about that performed at the hotel. Could I throw him in, too?
So far I had an unsolved arson, union workers being investigated by Auntie Mame, a random Secret Service agent, a counterfeiting scheme and a crooner. That's when the panic took hold. I had no clue how I'd make it work, but I promised Mary Jo I'd figure it out.
Days later, Mary Jo moved on to a world much better than ours.
It took me five years to find the nerve to tackle this project. Emotionally, I wasn't ready. In 2019, I pulled out MJ's research. Seeing her handwriting and holding her pencil sparked something. The book literally poured out of me.
It's not lost on me that the major characters are an older woman and a junior reporter who learns from her. In many ways, Mary Jo was my Rose. I will always love her for that.
I hope you enjoy getting to know Rose and Rae. Happy reading. --This text refers to the paperback edition.

This was such a good book. The characters are so well written. I love both Rose and Rae.
Rae is a tenacious young reporter that has been run out of her hometown because of a story she wrote about a local business. With time on her hands and a need to finally tackle a story that she has been wanting to cover since she was a child Rae calls Rose Trudeau.
Rose Trudeau is a strong formidable woman that never speaks to reporters about the fire at The Grande Hotel thirty years ago. But when the young woman who had been calling shows up at her front gate Rose decides to give the young woman a few minutes of her time. When she listens to the young woman and sees how determined she is, Rose makes a decision to give her an interview about the Grande Hotel Fire but only under certain terms.
This one has twists and turns with strong characters and scene descriptions that make you feel like you are right there.
Rose and Rae make a great team.

I love everything Adrienne Giordano writes, but this book has topped them all. The quirkiness of the characters, their truly believable dialog and interactions, the mystery... everything hooked me and made me have to keep reading to find out what happens. Please, tell me this isn't a standalone! I want more - much more - of Rose and Rae!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The main characters are wonderful. I cheered them on from page one. The mystery was so interesting, and the conclusion was satisfying. I really hope the author will make this a series. I want to meet these characters again!

Adrienne is one of my favorite authors and my collection of her books is growing. This was a totally new twist and I’ll eagerly await more books with these characters. I love the direction they’ll be going. At age 76, I especially appreciate Rose Trudeau.

Many thanks to the author / Netgalley Connect / Netgalley for the digital copy of this crime fiction. read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
Whatever you say can say about reported RaeLynn Demming, the first thing you notice is her tenacity. She's like a dog with a bone ... she just doesn't stop until she gets the story she's after.
For thirty years no one has covered the Grande Hotel fire where over 100 people perished. The investigation following proved that it was arson .. but no one has ever been charged with the crime.
RaeLynn wants an interview with Rose Trudeau, but so far all attempts have failed. But RaeLynn has not given up. Instead of calling, she shows up at Rose's mansion with a basket of goodies. What Rose sees in RaeLynn is like seeing herself all those years ago. What Rose wants is the arsonist and killer caught ... and justice for her best friend, who died in the fire.
It's an unlikely duo, but somehow it works. The two women go to the site of the fire but are warned off by the local police. Rose's family also warn them to leave it alone. But do they listen?
As determined as they are to solve the mystery, they find themselves facing an enemy who will do anything to keep the Grande's secrets buried.
This was a nice, easy read with characters that are outstanding. I loved the interplay between the two women. Although there is a generational gap, each sees in the other what they would like to see in themselves. It's heart-warming, it's sometimes funny, but never boring. Throw in Rose's two adult sons who worry that RaeLynn is leading Rose into possible trouble, they don't see that just the opposite might be true.
The plot was a bit complex, especially as Rose remembers all that happened the day of the fire ... so many of their friends were there as she tried to connect who they were, where they were, and who possibly could have started the fire. Their investigation reveals secrets that her late husband kept from her ... and the consequences thereof. The ending came as quite a surprise.
This is the first of the series, and I can't wait to see what happens next.
