Every installment of this series brings the relationship between our dynamic duo to all new levels, some good, some bad, some delicious, but always evolving. The beauty of this book was watching the relationship mend, watching how far Dex has come since the first book, and unfortunately, watching how truly stubborn, pigheaded and mildly superior Perry can be. She was hurt, deeply, I get that-but she wasn't faultless, she just choose to ignore that and cling tightly to her pain for a very, veerrrryyyy long time. Dex continued to lay his heart on the line and she just repeatedly threw it in his face. It was hard to witness.
We pick up pretty much where On Demon Wings leaves off with the aftermath of Perry's possession/exorcism. I still don't like Max, Ada is a gem, Perry's mom can suck it and Pippa's back story just breaks my heart. Rebecca is as spunky as ever, love her. Now that Perry knows Pippa's story, she has a whole new fear to deal with-will her mom do the same to her eventually? Couple that with everything else that went on in her parents house and she realizes how very much she can no longer stay there. So, off to Seattle she goes to pick up the pieces and see where her life takes her.
A second chance for the Experiment In Terror web series is as good as a place to start as any, and soon Dex and Perry are off to the deep woods off Canada in search of Sasquatch. Yes, you heard me. Sounds hooky, I know, but it quickly becomes apparent that what they have on their hands is much more dangerous than that. As has become the norm for this series, what follows is a collection of terrifying, chilling, creepy and suspenseful events that these two must navigate all while figuring out how they now fit in each other's lives and where they go from here. From start to finish, this book will grip you with many different kinds of fear while dosing you with some strong emotions. While we aren't left with a cliffhanger this time, I am still very much ready to jump in the next book to see where we go from here, not only with our fab pair, but we still have some unanswered questions floating around and I'm sure there are plenty more chills go come.
~I had lied because I was scared. I had thrown love away because I was scared. All because I was scared. And I was still scared, no matter how deep I fell into my self-loathing, I knew there was a new chord of terror waiting to emerge. It was the fear of losing myself all over again, of letting go and never getting my soul back. It was the fear of learning to love again and having my heart broken. It was the fear of being a fool. And it was the same fear that millions of people faced every single day. The fear of loving someone. The fear of being loved. Yet people did it anyway. So why couldn’t I?~
I think it goes without saying that I absolutely love this series. It's smart, sexy and absolutely scares the pants off me. I'm not a huge fan of horror, but when you throw Dex and Perry into the mix, how can I resist?
Dex definitely had his work cut out for him in Into the Hollow. Not only is his job on the line, but, more importantly, his relationship with Perry. He knows she has a right to hate him, but he had his reasons for acting the way he did. He uses the opportunity of them being alone to his advantage. He needs to convince her that he loves her and always has, but there's the little obstacle of a real life monster that gets in the way.
There are a lot of reasons why this book is my favorite in the series so far. Both Dex and Perry's feelings are raw and the hurt is fresh. The danger is crazy because they're battling the weather and terrain, their feelings, a monster and at least one crazy person. I have to admit that even though I understood Perry's reluctance, Dex won me over a lot faster than he won over Perry and that kind of frustrated me. Maybe it was being in Dex's head in the Dex Files where readers got a glimpse into what Dex had gone through up until the beginning of Into the Hollow. Whatever the reason I was ready for Perry to give him a chance. *sigh*
Both Perry and Dex went through unmistakable changes in their trip through the veil and there are more consequences to that than even they know. They came a long way by the end of Into the Hollow, but they still have a long way to go. Stay tuned for reviews for Come Alive and Ashes to Ashes, as well as the Dex's last novella, And With Madness Comes the Light. Yeah, I'm a little behind in my reviews, but once I got going, I couldn't stop ;)
