Editorial Reviews

Review

'Captivating characters and a cleverly designed, fantastical plot. A highly recommended set of shorts.'
The Wishing Shelf Book Awards

Star Rating:  ★★★★★REVIEW
After glancing at the cover for this book and skimming the blurb, I decided this is going to be very dark, very gritty, and very fantastical. And I wasn't far wrong. Written by the talented Konn Lavery, it follows the Nameless One who is attempting to understand the deaths of 22 souls. What follows is a cleverly plotted story - divided up into 22 individual shorts - populated with intriguing, often charismatic characters who all seem to be in a different state of flux.
In terms of writing style, this is where the author truly excels. Not only is the pacing excellent, there's also a good balance between powerful descriptive prose and realistic, well-written dialogue. This is a very atmospheric story. The author knows his setting - the mysterious Midway - and wants the reader, like the characters, to be immersed in it.
This set of shorts is not a simple read; the reader will have to work hard to keep up with what's going on, why it's going on, and even where it's happening. But it's intriguing stuff. It'll hook you in. And I suspect, like me, you will end up determined to find the answers the Nameless One is looking for.
Who is the book for? Well, if you enjoy the later Clive Cussler novels full of lazy predictability, this book is not for you. But if you don't mind working a little, if you enjoy being intrigued, of never knowing what will happen next but really, really wanting to know, this set of shorts will be right up your street.
Enjoy!--- Literary Titan

Into the Macrocosm by Konn Lavery is a collection of thought-provoking short stories about an unknown character who is the observer of 22 deaths. At the beginning of this intellectually invigorating collection readers are given intriguing theories on life after death. Konn Lavery addresses these theories in multiple ways, all of which are fictional in nature but spiritual at heart. Although the character is more of an observer in these stories, I like how I can still feel the personal connections while reading along. It was easy to get entangled in these insightful stories and there was a sense of adventure that was consistent throughout these stories. I also appreciated the subheadings in this collection because it helped me keep track of special events that lead to the plot twists.
Into The Macrocosm has so many fascinating stories that it will be impossible for readers to find at least one that speaks to them. None of the stories are overly horrifying, nor would I put these stories in the horror genre, there is just an ever-present ominous feeling that permeates these stories, enough to give you goosebumps rather than frighten you outright. This is a metaphysical exploration that leaves you with thoughts that are hard to shake. The way spiritual transformation is portrayed was enough for me to set the book down and ponder the implications for a bit. I loved that this collection used these dark stories to highlight the importance of self-awareness. I also loved how the author showed how much the darkness within us and around us can weigh us down.
Konn Lavery's Into The Macrocosm is an exceptional short story collection that explores some provocative ideas through a darkly imaginative lens reminiscent of Edgar Allen Poe or H.P. Lovecraft.

From the Author

Expanding Macrocosm: I've always dreamed of having a large universe to encase all the stories I tell. Into the Macrocosm has let me take the dark fantasy, scifi, horror, thrillers, strange, and the beyond and rope them into one telling. This collection has opened the doors to more exciting work in the future.
Transmedia Storytelling: One feature I enjoy about writing is the ability to explore transmedia storytelling, which is expanding on a story in multiple mediums. This short story collection contains photo illustrations I've done for each story. There is also a score for this collection found on my website.Even though they are not key elements to the story, they offer additional universe media for readers to enjoy.
