Can a journey across the Holy Land redeem a reluctant pilgrim?
Ben Cahill’s life is an alcohol-saturated mess. After an insincere effort in a rehab facility, he is alienated from his family, out of work, and determined to continue his habit. To make matters worse, he finds himself on a tour of Israel, along with, as he calls them, a bunch of Holy Rollers.
As the trip progresses, Ben experiences the Holy Land’s major historical sites and is exposed to God’s word. He interacts with his fellow travelers, gradually learning about their faith and their lives. Along the way, Ben becomes embroiled in a spiritual war, reinforcing his guilt and, in turn, forcing him to recall his past actions and behaviors. He also begins a different journey, one that leads him to redemption and a place in God’s family.

About the author

Steven Rogers is an award-winning author and novelist. HIs novel "Into the Room" was the first place winner in the Spiritual Fiction Category for the 2022 Eric Hoffer Book Awards. In addition, the book has been named as one of three finalists in the Debut Novel category of the American Fiction Christian Writers Carol Awards.
After attending The College of the Holy Cross, Steven became a Certified Public Accountant and went on to fill various roles in public accounting and private industry. When asked to describe his professional career, he uses the phrase, “fortunate beyond all reason.” It enabled him to travel extensively around the United States, visit Amsterdam, England and South America, meet famous people like Alan Alda, Howie Long, and Earl Hamner, ride in a private jet, tour a nuclear power plant, interact with members of Congress, and, incredibly, stand next to Bill Clinton as the former President shaved in a public restroom. More importantly, his corporate career created profound and enduring friendships. In addition, Steve fondly remembers his time as a fifth-grade teacher, a role he filled for three years between financially oriented gigs.
Despite these amazing experiences, Steve would label himself a “Reluctant Accountant” or, as his older brother once put it, “You’re a born Classics Major.” He is a lifelong lover of books and literature who, over the years, dabbled with writing fiction, dreaming of a time he could fully commit to learning the craft. Since retiring from the corporate world in 2016, Steve has done just that, completing two novels and a half-dozen short stories, one of which, “Deep Waters,” received an honorable mention award in the 2020 89th Annual Writer’s Digest Writing Competition.
Steve loves the process of writing, especially exploring characters that are either broken or facing unfamiliar situations. They are usually ordinary people, confronting their own internal demons and the challenges of day-to-day living, being pushed to their limits. He also enjoys bringing his stories to a happy, or at least hopeful, ending.
In his free time, Steve loves to fish, hike, and travel. His favorite destinations are Israel, Jordan, Costa Rica, and Italy. Having grown up in Massachusetts, he is a die-hard Boston sports fan and enjoys visiting Maine every summer to fish. Steve, a proud father of three adult children and one incredibly lucky son-in-law, is happily married to his wife of thirty-six years, Kathy. They live in Richmond, Virginia.

Ben Cahill is a real estate developer, and profligate alchohol abuser. Rogers tells the story from his perspective, and it reveals that, while our protagonist's life is in free fall, there's a part of him that is self aware enough to know he needs help.
Of course, the grip of alchoholism is strong and Rogers describes the struggle with unsettling detail, and gritty honesty.
Of course, this being a faith based novel, we soon learn that Cahill has not been placed on this trip by accident. In fact, as we learn of a Capra-esque plot twist which reveals an underlying support staff focused specifically on Cahill's well being and redemption, the reader begins to see the hope of salvation gradually come into focus. The various chapters labeled as "Progress Reports" littered throughout guide us like bread crumbs to a resolution full of promise.
While this may seem an inevitable result, Rogers does a good job of showing the steps along the way. Character development, while somewhat rudimentary and stereotyped, also progresses at a believable pace, and tugs the reader along at a comfortable pace.
The same could be said of some of Capra's greatest movies, so Rogers is in good company on this one.
And it sounds like we have not heard the last of Ben Cahill. From the author's blog, it appears this is one of a trilogy of novels. I'm eager to see what's next for our intrepid hero!

It was a beautiful reminder that God's grace is available to all, regardless of their past mistakes.
The story flows in a brisk manner, new characters add nuance and texture while providing the reader additional reasons to care and read on. The description of the sites in this most interesting part of the world do it justice ( I have traveled there). And, this is all provided to you within the context of a gripping battle for meaning and redemption.
Into the room delivers in a big way and is well and worth your time and money.
Thank you Steven Rogers
I recommend this book for anyone who doubts about the impact that such a Holy Land can place upon you. You will doubt no more!
How do I know this? Because, after reading Steven Rogers' book, Into the Room, I feel like I know Ben Cahill. He feels as real as you or me. Mr. Rogers has created a character who is finally beginning to see the Light.
The saga takes place during a 12 day trip to Israel. Israel is depicted by the author with spare, defining prose, reminiscent of some of Ernest Hemingway's way with words.
I highly recommend reading Into the Room. It is a fascinating look at one man's pain and opportunities to change. Into the Room inspires Hope.
