The odyssey of Christopher McCandless.....

I came to this film not knowing anything about it except everybody had told me how great the book was first and how the film was such an accurate retelling, close to capturing the book and what a wonderful encapsulation of “Alex’s” (Christopher’s) trip into the Alaskan wilderness.
That was all I knew about it. Recently I read an article of the best films of the new millennium and “Into the Wild” was listed, so I ordered it on Blu Ray because of the higher resolution and I have become used to watching this format vs dvd.

Watching it was a real eye opener and flashback to my youth of dealing with an abusive rigidly controlling parent and ending up suffering tremendous PTSD which has colored my almost entire adult life. So, I immediately connected with Christopher’s situation. “Gotta get away...” ran through my young life also.

The adventure that Christopher goes on and travels through is truly one of the most beautiful and interesting journey I have perhaps ever seen and it is made even more special by the characters he meets and associates with traveling cross-country...just amazing, enchanting even, or at least I thought so.

He has offers from people he has met to stay there with them and not continue on. But, he is young and he has already planned his odyssey into the Alaskan wilderness to live off the land. So after some rough spots he finally makes it into the far reaches from civilization.

The photography here is simply even more breathtaking that where he has passed through before, and the wildlife, etc is captivating and in some cases terrifying. Christopher is however in this over his head for one person alone to handle. So, things get really tough and food becomes a serious problem ending in an arresting error.

I have now ordered the book to read because I need to gather more knowledge of him and his decision-making ability etc.

I urge you to see this beautiful movie if you have not yet done so as it is memorable and you will come away from it a clear and greater understanding of life lived alone in a wild remote place with nobody to talk to, be advised by or to discuss things and situations with. You will perhaps never forget this true story of Christopher and his escape from his family and friends into the wilds of the Deep Alaskan Wilderness.

Update: I've read both books as a follow up to this movie. I was utterly moved by his sister's book. I read it in one day. It fills in the gaps to the story, exposes the hidden truth behind why Chris did what he did, and it makes you think damn hard about life. A must read if this movie speaks to you.

Starz had a free weekend so I jumped at the chance to finally watch this movie. I ended up watching it twice. I ordered it right away because there don't seem to be alot of sellers that have it offered as a new movie.
What can I say about this movie and Chris' story? Powerful, truthful, stripped right down to raw human emotion. It reminded me of a cross between Cheryl Strayed's "Wild" and a modern day version of Kerouac's "On the Road".
This movie speaks so much to my soul that I went on to buy the book "Into the Wild" and "The Wild Truth". Can't wait to read them. I will not be visiting Bus 142 as many others have done, but will continue on in my own solo adventures in the urban jungle and exploring the mountains and forests. Here's to you Chris for inspiring others to keep the dream going for you! I get it!

This is one of my all-time favorite movie based on true events. It has so much spiritual significance to it, this should not be missed.
An interesting fact is that the watch that the actor Emile Hirsch wears in the movie is Christopher McCandless’s real life watch. Emile really embraced the character at a very deep and dark level. Alex Supertramp’s dysfunctional family left him with deep scares and a torn soul. You could say he was trying to re-invent himself, hence the new name and burning his social security card and IDs. Alex had a great resentment towards his family, so much that he didn’t contact them once for the entire adventure of his nearly two year sabbatical. Although this seems very cruel to do to his parents, some of us with broken and emotionally abusive families can fully understand and relate.

Even without any dialogue, there are many beautiful scenes in this movie, accompanied by a powerful soundtrack. The beauty of nature and freedom of being lost in it is captivating and beyond words. Being deep in the Colorado Rockies, I know this feeling from experience, and it has brought me to blissful tears on many occasions.

Christopher McCandless was living on a higher consciousness and could see through the veil of modern society. The mundane life society has structured for the human race has repressed the human spirit and replaced it with pointless temporary career success and material accumulation. This movie will give you a glimpse of this. I believe the motive of this movie is to help more people wake up, get their priorities in check; and realize what really is important in life. Is it buying a big house and fancy car; or traveling, exploring, and having new and exciting experiences; even if that means living modestly and out of your comfort zone. We all have one life and sitting in front of a computer all day or at a job we hate, is not living it the way God intended us to. It is time for us all to wake up!

Like most of us, I believe Christopher McCandless was searching for true freedom and happiness, and discovered it. It may have ended in tragedy for him, but it is not the number of years in your live that is important, but how much you lived during those years that matters.

Hirsch plays the role of Chris McCandless, a 22-year-old college graduate who embarks on a journey of self-discovery in the Alaskan wilderness. The movie relates his travels, friendships, and adventures along the way. This film is likely to appeal to fans of movies such as NEVER CRY WOLF or JEREMIAH JOHNSON or EASY RIDER. This is not a movie for everyone, but I am sure that I will enjoy watching it several more times. It should hold major appeal for those who enjoy going off the trails and into the wilderness themselves.

Sean Penn gilt als Extremist, in seinen Schauspielrollen wie in seinen Regiearbeiten. Sein Spielfilm
INTO THE WILD ist eine Feier des Außenseiters und eine Feier Amerikas. In über Einhundertvierzig Minuten
werde ich auf eine Reise mitgenommen, die mir nicht nur die äußerliche Schönheit eines Landes zeigt, sondern
auch einen jungen Mann auf der Suche nach dem Sinn des Lebens. Unterlegt mit toller und passender Musik
ist klar auch der Neben- Cast wie William Hurt und Marcia Gay Harden überzeugend.
INTO THE WILD: Man mag dem Film vielleicht ankreiden, dass Einhundertvierzig Minuten für eine solche Geschichte,

On the face of it, the premise for Into The Wild sounds neither promising nor very interesting (young man rejects his parents affluent lifestyle and becomes a penniless drifter on a voyage of self discovery). However, two things will probably make the knowledgeable viewer sit up and take notice, firstly that it is based very closely on a true story, and secondly it is adapted for the screen and directed by Sean Penn.
The film details the experiences of one Christopher McCandless (Emile Hirsch) or Alexander Supertramp as he calls himself, as he abandons the path his life has apparently been set upon, and sets out on a voyage of self discovery, relying on his wits in order to survive. When we first see McCandless he has arrived in Alaska on what will be the final part of his journey, and through a series of flashbacks and an ongoing narration by his baffled but loving sister (Jena Malone in a great understated role), we learn of the decisions that brought about this strange choices in his life, and the effect this has on his family.
It is clear very early on in the movie that McCandless has a deep seated resentment for his parents (played with great effect by Marcia Gay Harden and in particular William Hurt) stemming from their essential marital problems that he feels they both took out on their children. Rejecting their consumer driven lifestyle, McCandless graduates from college, and without telling anyone drives his car into the middle of nowhere, where he abandons it and burns what little money he has before setting out on his life changing odyssey. Clearly not wanting to be found, McCandless survive on his wits as well as occasionally working an odd job here and there in order to earn a little money in order to get by. Along the way he encounters a variety of people, including Catherine Keener and Brian Dierker as an ageing hippy couple who take to the likeable McCandless, as well as Vince Vaughn in a great role as a farmer who gives McCandless a part time job, and which the letters that Chris subsequently writes to him detailing his experiences forms much of the films core narrative. However, it is Hal Holbrook's role as the ageing widower who attempts to take Chris under his wing that is the most deeply affecting of all the relationships that McCandless strikes up whilst on the road, and the most heartbreaking when Chris must ultimately reject this kindly but lonely man's offer of permanent friendship in order to remain true to his own goals.
However, it is when McCandless arrives at his ultimate goal, Alaska that things begin to take a turn for the worse. Having eschewed friendships along the way, it is only during his time living in an abandoned school bus that he comes to realise that as it is so memorably put in the film "true happiness comes from a shared experience" and the isolation that he has craved for so long turns to loneliness. McCandless sustains himself for a while during his time in the Alaskan wilderness, but ultimately both the harsh realities of life and his own ill-preparedness begin to take their toll (this is brought home with brutal effect during one scene when McCandless attempts to preserve the meat from a moose he has killed). It would be easy to portray McCandless as a romantic dreamer or a naïve fool, and in the hands of a less mature director this is probably how the film would have gone, but Penn portrays McCandless' journey with an honesty that is refreshing, enjoyable and sad in equal measure. Once again, Sean Penn proves that he is not only a great actor, but he also a great director.

'Into The Wild' is a very gentle, introspective film that had me engrossed the whole way through. Emile Hirsch's performance draws you immediately into his characters (Chris') pursuit of a free, unfettered life, in touch with nature and it's finer elements. You understand his idealism and his strong focus to achieve his aims. Sean Penn directed this film superbly. One part that stands out is when Chris goes into a big city and his feelings of disconnect and alienation. Penn manages to show these emotions (using various film and camera techniques) with real skill and you feel as awkward and out of place as Chris does. The soundtrack is awesome, with music by Eddie Vedder and it really adds to the overall feel of the film. You can really see the benefits of this type of lifestyle and a part of you yearns to follow the life Chris did and to experience life, relationships and nature on a fundamental, stripped back level. Having read the book I was aware of the general story and this film is remarkably faithful to it, there are very few deviations. In addition, I felt none of the frustrations with Chris' attitude that I felt when reading the book. Being portrayed on the screen and acted so well, I understood the mindset a little more. He is shown to be more naive in the book than in the film, but this made the film a better viewing experience, they are different media after all. This film offers some insightful ideas and philosophy, but you aren't spoon fed them or have them rammed down your throat, which is a refreshing change from a Hollywood film. With amazing locations, excellent acting, top direction and an inspired soundtrack this makes for one great film and one I highly recommend.

Here's a movie that passed me by somehow. Like many I expect, I discovered it through the magic of Eddie Vedder. Initially, I thought it may get a boring 2 hours if it's just going to be about a guy who's trying to survive in Alaska but then it becomes clear that the movie is more about building up how he got there instead. The drop-in stories that litter the entire journey are all well told and acted out (even Vince Vaughn). As the story rolls out, I'm sure most of us end up saying to ourselves 'I wish I could just up sticks and do that', and that's how it hooks in your attention throughout as you realise he did what you you've dreamt about...

The cinamatography is pretty awesome thoughout and we are given a blu-ray transfer worthy of purchase. Crisp images throughout, a little bit of grain in certain scenes but nothing to panic over. On the audio front, there isn't much call for anything spectacular on the surround front but because of the heavy reliance music to bond the movie, the TrueHD track delivers the goods.
