Amazon's new $100 Echo is a disappointment for anyone looking to upgrade from the original model. Sure, it's nearly half the price, but its sound quality is also significantly worse. With that in mind, the $150 Echo Plus seems like a far better successor on paper. It features better speakers and a built-in smart home hub. It's still not a must-have upgrade -- a testament to how much Amazon got right at the beginning -- but at least it offers some improvements over its predecessor.ProsSounds better than the first EchoHas access to thousands of Alexa skillsSlightly cheaper than beforeConsSmart hub feature is pretty basic$100 Echo is a better dealNot a huge upgrade for first-gen Echo ownersThe Echo Plus is a minor upgrade over the original Echo, with slightly better sound. But its much-touted smart hub feature is pretty limited, and it's not a significant improvement overall for existing Echo owners. The $150 Echo Plus is in a curious spot when compared with the other smart speakers out there. Amazon's $100 model makes more sense for anyone just dipping their toes into the Alexa ecosystem. And if you're looking for the best sound quality, you're better off with the $199 Sonos One.If this review helped please hit thumbs up as amazon uses this to tell if reviews are getting noticed and what people’s thoughts are!

I'm very pleased with my Echo Plus and the things I am able to get Alexa to do through it, but I'm hopeful that many new skills and features will be added in the near future. I realize this is a newer market and it will take a bit before all kinds of innovative and creative functions can be added. For now, I'm satisfied with asking Alexa to turn my house lights/lamps on and off through my TP-Link smart plugs and Phillips hue light bulbs (all incredibly easy to install through the Echo Plus). Some other features I enjoy are the voice commands to control my music through Amazon prime or other paired speakers. I like how it seamlessly connects through bluetooth to my LG SJ9 soundbar and subwoofer by just saying, "Alexa, pair speakers." I can't wait until there's a better and quicker way to control the TV. I currently use the "quick remote" app, but it's very command specific and Fire TV apparently is still not as fast based on the few YouTube video demonstrations I've watched. I can order amazon products and with the correct enabled skills, groceries too. Besides asking Alexa to answer many different questions through my echo (ie. weather, time, date, to do lists, places nearby, directions, miles to locations from home, etc.), I can connect it to my new MacBook.

The product itself looks good in any room and is easy to set up straight out of the box. I like the lights on the upper portion which are a nice touch carried over from the original design and will light upon calling Alexa letting you know she's listening and waiting on a command. The speaker sounds great for the price and I sometimes ask Alexa to make phone calls for me (ie. when doing dishes). The audio for the calls is usually good. The echo's volume may be turned up or down either by voice command or by turning the upper portion of the cylinder to the LEFT (L=Loud) or to the right to turn it down. The speakers on the echo plus are significantly better than the 2nd generation echo dot which I also purchased. I own some Bose portable speakers I paid $250 and for the price of the Echo Plus, the sound quality is pretty good with the Bose beating them by a bit as there's a better base sound.

The echo dot 2nd generation can play the same music station as the Echo Plus at the same time in different rooms or they can individually play different stations and do different things. Having multiple echos allows one to use them as an intercom between different rooms. I like that option, but have not tried it, because I have to change the name of one of the devices and I really like saying 'Alexa.' Overall, the possibilities are endless with the Echo Plus as more products are created in the tech market to function in unison with the echo. There are endless things I can do with this device, but this review would be even lengthier. There are quite a few random YouTube videos if more information is needed on the product. I recommend this product completely and can't wait to see the next steps in its development so I can further benefit from its use and future skills!

This is my first experience with the Echo technology. When I purchased the Amazon Echo Plus, I had one idea in mind about what I wanted to do with it. I had no idea about its potential and capability. You need to download the Alexa app first. It’s pretty easy to initially set up but after that there is a learning curve. My wife and I both have separate Amazon accounts but this is registered to her account which is also connected to Prime. You have to set up a different household profile for each user but still have access to the main account's connections. Echo Plus has its own hub so many devices can be connected directly. It was simple to connect smart plugs and Hue bulbs. These can be scheduled to turn off and on at specific times of the day or with voice commands. Echo could detect my voice from our living room to our bedroom about 30 feet away down a hall and obey commands without shouting. They can be controlled remotely from the Alexa app also. We have Pandora and Prime music which allows for a wide variety of music options on voice command. Programming your news and sports sources for a daily summary is easily done in the Settings. There are so many capabilities I won’t spoil the fun of your own discovery and I’m still experiencing new ones myself. Since I am the main user, my wife is not tech savvy as she will be the first to admit, one problem I encountered was entering my cell phone number in my profile. Because I use it on my own Amazon account, I can’t use it as a member of the household. This limits the use of the Echo for communication to only the main account if you already have one with Amazon using your cell number. If you don’t have one this is not a problem. I’m hoping this will be addressed in a future update. I had to delete the number from my Amazon account in order to use it with the Echo Plus. Now I do not have communication regarding orders from my Amazon account. The sound from the Echo Plus is very good…not Bose quality but right up there. It’s better than my Bluetooth speaker which I hooked up but liked the sound from Echo better. There is a power supply…no battery backup and two buttons on top…Mute and ON/OFF. Under the bottom there is a reset button. Rings of light on top have different meanings with different colors and the top of the cylinder turns controlling volume. Although there are other options for setting up a Smart Home, the Amazon Echo Plus does so much more. There are many Smart Home devices that are compatible with Echo and easily available to control and monitor most areas in your home. Overall, as a first-time user, I am very pleased and would highly recommend the Amazon Echo Plus for it’s quality and overall capability to perform a variety of functions including the Smart Home function. This is an update. The tech support for the Echo Plus is exceptional! If you are having a problem, I would definitely contact them.
