In between the experimentalism of "Salad Days" and the prog-pop of "What Sequel?", Cheer-Accident crafted a diverse and challenging work many fans peg as a masterpiece. Opener "The Autumn Wind Is A Pirate" covers so much ground I get excited just thinking about it, moving from a jagged RIO groove that collapses on itself to a nasty dissonant pattern that masterfully segues into a simply beautiful middle section with acoustic slide guitar and melodica that could go on for years, but alas within about five to six minutes it moves into a noise-rock pattern using the same rhythm as the middle section, which then goes into some chicken-scratch guitar signaling the final section, a somewhat funky bit with a killer horn arrangement. Yeah, it's like 22 1/2 minutes long, but that length seems to go by too quickly. Other highlights include the jaunty novelty ditty (with some truly goofy falsetto and a lead vocal that sounds absolutely mad) "Camp O' Physique", "The Day After I Never Met You", which starts off poppy and goes into some experimental piano work, "Smile", which hints at their prog-pop sound but also fits some tricky and somewhat abrasive mathy patterns in there, and the closing "Find", which like "Autumn Wind" is over 22 minutes and all the better for it. Though, the ambient middle section is pretty static and didn't necessarily need to be ten minutes long.

Conclusion- if you are a Cheer-Accident fan, or simply a fan of math rock or modern prog rock (not neo-prog though, this doesn't have a bunch of chintzy keyboards and 80s nostalgia), YOU NEED THIS. Make sure to listen to it all the way through, because this isn't Top 40 pap where you can cherry-pick a couple of singles and listen to those. This is visceral and difficult stuff, not in an art-for-art's-sake way, but in a submerse-yourself-in-the-prog-double-album-voyage way. Go along for the ride and discover some simply brilliant music.

This is the best Cheer-Accident album, and one of the best albums I've ever heard! It's really hard to say what "genre" of music this is. It's really hard to describe how this sounds. All I can say is I've had it for a weekend, and listened to it 20 times. This is an album you can listen to over and over and always pick up something new that you didn't hear. It's overwhelmingly complex but the complexity is well done... Not a bunch of parts strung together, but a fluid masterpiece! If you're a Cheer-Accident fan, you will love this. If you've never heard the band, this is where to start. If you (for whatever incomprehensible reason) don't like Cheer-Accident, try this one... This is not only my favorite Cheer-Accident album, but one of my all time favorite albums EVER! 5 stars is not enough!
