I purchased all three of these DVDs and Amazon has most understandingly refunded my payment for the Bruckner and Beethoven as they were labelled completely incorrectly. This is a manufacturer's error, but gives Amazon a bad name.

I've no complaints about the symphonic performances of Beethoven's Fifth and Mahler's Fifth with Abbado and the extraordinary Lucerne Festival Orchestra - both of which I already own - nor with Boulez' Bruckner - just the sloppy editing. But as I'm supposedly writing about the Mahler disc, I'll use it as an example. First of all, the music in most of the documentary, at times is so loud that there's no way one can hear the female narrator's voice. Luckily, I speak Spanish so I could use the subtitles, for there's no way I could make out what she was saying. On the other hand, the musicologist's discourses were music-free, except for his own sensitive demonstrations on the piano. Also, you have to do some fancy footwork to get the chapters you want with the remote as they simply do NOT function on the DVD.

I hope Amazon heeds this: Abbado, the musicians and above all, Mahler deserve much better. Someone had the idea to put out a few amateur productions for the market, and I believe that EuroArts was conned. Producer and perfectionist Paul Smaczny would never have approved of such a careless mishandling of his work with some of the greatest orchestras of the world, and with the composers he's so skillfully documented on DVD. All EuroArts productions are first class. These are...what can I say? "shameful". Luckily, the rest of the sound and the performances are beyond criticism. Abbado's light, especially, shines through like a beacon of excellence.
