Joseph O'Connor is a leading international NLP trainer, writer and consultant. He is the author of seventeen books including the bestselling Introducing NLP and Leading with NLP. A decent introduction to explaining NLP. I think the authors have done a good job at introducing the NLP concepts in this book. A good book that you can use to figure out if someone is lying, or how they think, once you have learned the concepts.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming is a pseudo-science that has dramatically improved the way that I approach business and social scenarios with confidence and success. NLP is an approach to communication that focuses on the link, hardwired in our brains, between language and behaviors. In that way, this book is more of a toolkit than a textbook. It presents the reader with new processes and patterns to help make them a more effective, confident communicator. NLP is no more or less real than traditional hypnotherapy, and both probably work simply by virtue of practitioners’ belief. While some of the book may be a bit exaggerated in its efficacy, I have certainly gathered some tools from this book that I use on a daily basis. NLP has helped me to become more perceptive and clairvoyant in life, as well as enhancing my ability to call upon strength and confidence in character whenever it’s needed. Even for a chronic skeptic like myself, there are certainly some useful tools buried in this book.

Excellent Introduction

This was recomended to me by a friend when I mentioned I was getting interested in personal development and how the brain works. Discovering NLP was like discovering Blues was the root of Rock and Roll. There are many practices and techniques explained in this book that can be very powerful. While this is an introduction it is very comforting to know that there are tools available for you to create the change that you want if you put in the time and the work:).

Just an overview

At one point, this book was probably the best thing on the market. If you read "Frogs to Princes", then you will know the level of improvement this book is over that one. Original NLP books came out in the mid to late 70's and this book was written in 1993 with supposedly few changes to the second edition.

The author is constantly referring to other more thorough books. The title is accurate, it is an introduction and nothing more. If this was only meant to be an introduction, I think it should have been half the size. Too much of it was filler text.

I'm looking elsewhere.

Useful Introduction to NLP

This book serves as a good intro into NLP. I read the first edition, which features a different title, but materially similar content. NLP is far less about influencing others and far more about understanding behavior - especially our own - and how to improve our actions, influence our beliefs, and shape our life.

The book is a relatively short 200 pages, but is packed with useful information, insights, techniques and exercises to introduce the reader to NLP. The book isn't a comprehensive guide, and the "introduction" element of the title is apt - it is enough to let you know what NLP is, what the key elements are, expose you to a few exercises to see the usefulness of the rechniques, and leave you wanting for the next step - training - which they encourage readers to think about.

There are some basic techniques for creating rapport, memorization, understanding body language, and how to ask key questions. You will finish reading this book and are almost guaranteed to pull out something useful.
