Introducing Opus 5 the debut album from an all star quintet made up of Criss Cross jazz recording artists is a swinging challenging set of originals composed by various band members & tunes from the post bop cannon as well as a traditional Russian folk song recast in post bop. The group consists of some of NYCs hardest working most in demand sidemen that also take the added work of leading their own groups as well.

On tenor sax is Seamus Blake a veteran of the NYC jazz scene who's been making records with Criss Cross from the start of his career with The Call in the early 90s. Since then Seamus has recorded several more albums as a leader most for the Criss Cross Label such as Bellwether and is a melodic saxophonist that tends to favor motifs & theme variation improv with some Rollins like humor in his playing.

On trumpet one of my personal favorites Alex Sipiagin. Sipiangin is a Russian native who immigrated to NYC in the early 1990s, since he's been on the scene he's been playing as a lead trumpet soloist in the Mingus Big Band a position he holds still today. He's also been legendary bassist/composer Dave Holland's go to guy when he needs brass playing in Holland's big band on Overtime & What Goes Around.
