Born in 1919, González also retired from playing professionally years before this, his debut CD, was even recorded. He reemerged in 1996 when World Circuit stopped in Cuba to record for several days. Brilliant Set from a Brilliant Artist

Before getting this album, I was only familiar with Gonzalez from his work with Buena Vista Social Club. This recording carries on that same style of music but, of course, focusing more on the piano than the other instruments or the singing.

I saw a lot of 5-star reviews of this record here. I don't necessarily disagree with the reviews as this is certainly top-notch music. But it doesn't reach the level of creativity or artistry as the members of Buena Vista did together; none of the solo work that I've heard does. I reserved a star, not as a knock against this set, but rather in recognition that there is plenty of music (including music with Gonzalez) that reaches a higher level of quality.

If you listed to the Buena Vista album and found yourself hungering to hear more of the piano (I did), then this set is definitely for you. There isn't anything particularly new or groundbreaking here. Rather, it is the familiar done excellently well. You will feel the soul; you will feel yourself taken by the rhythm. You will listen again and again.

This is a brilliant album. You're more familiar with it than you think: I'm sitting here at my local Starbuck's and they're playing the CD in full, 11 years after its release. It's not a one-time occurrence: you hardly ever hear the contemporaneously released Buena Vista Social Club these days, but you hear "Introducing..." everywhere and all the time. González passed away in 2003 at age 84, but his legend only grows. As to why González was discovered by worldwide audiences so late in his life, well, there was the little matter of the Revolution and 37 or so lost and buried years (1959 to rediscovery in 1996).

How wonderful that the man's artistry was recorded before it's gone forever. The album brought me back to my childhood home in Havana - all the songs that remind me of my parents and grandmother, now gone but not forgotten. The execution is flawless technically and yet has passion and soul and whimsy ; I was surprised to find myself listening to the Russian ballad "Black Eyes" in the middle of the typically Afro-Cuban "Mandinga" and had to listen to the piece a few times before I caught the rift between the two compositions.
The album represents the best of the Cuban "big band" era and is a must for every lover of Cuban music. My Dad would have loved this CD.

Having just seen the movie "Buena Vista Social Club", I needed to hear more wonderful music from the principal musicians and singers. Special thanks should go to Ry Cooder and his son for rediscovering this historic music before they all passed.( Of whom most already have.)

All the musicians and singers are very special in their own singular, as well as collective right, but my personal favorite is Ruben Gonzalez on piano. What a Gem! I urge anyone who loves Afro-Cuban Jazz to add this to your collection, you WILL NOT be disappointed!
