About the Author
Nikolaus Correll is an Assistant Professor in Computer Science at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Nikolaus obtained a MS degree from ETH Zuerich in Electrical Engineering and a PhD in Computer Science from EPFL, Switzerland. Before joining the faculty at CU Boulder, Nikolaus did a post-doc at MIT CSAIL.

Even though it is an intro, it begins with basics, then rapidly moves up to sampling and other advanced undergrad topics (requiring a little integration and understanding of probability). If you want a detailed "pre" treatment of robotic sampling theory/techniques and history (to about 1993) readable by a smart HS audience, also consider Moravec's classic: Robot: Mere Machine to Transcendent Mind.
If you're a home/hobbyist robot builder you'll find a LOT here to advance both your knowledge and craft. The treatment on the web, with hundreds of contributors ala a "robot wiki" via blogs, updates to the text, and much more, will become a community you'll love if you're in the field, or even a hobbyist. I'm both a post C-M roboticist and hobbyist, so all groups of neurons love this title! Unlike ANY others in the field, this text and it's online materials cover BOTH mechanical and electronic intelligence-- an eye opener even for old eyes in the field. It's like discovering how op amps do calculus, then learning that HP and TI used the cross sections of wires for sine calculations before op amps!
Highly recommended. I got the print version, made tons of notes in the margin, and use github, pdf and kindle to search for specifics, as this also makes a great practical reference, whether it's making a toy for the granddaughter or an advanced security-patrolling robot using Beagle/Pi/Arduino (or in my case, a rotor drone-- rule your neighborhood, dude!). Are you as amazed as I am at how Linux is becoming the go to platform in this field, including even in ARM? It's like deja vu for us old folks who cut our teeth on Unix. Too cool.
