Although it is true that there are other books with better overall descriptions of each subject, this book has the most interesting and challenging problems. The information is really interesting and really gets you thinking about Mathematics in the past and the problems are no different. It is challenging because you have to change your ways of tackling mathematics as a whole, but that's what makes this book really fun. Great book and would recommend to anyone interested in the history of mathematics and how they came to be even if you're not taking the class.

I enjoyed reading this book, but I speak only for the reading material and not the actual math problems. I learned quite a bit and the book goes through quite an extensive and thorough explanation in biographies and methods that were used in the different mathematical discoveries. Really easy to read and understand. If you're a math major or someone who is just interested in the history of mathematics, then I highly recommend.

The historical development of math provided in the book is worthwhile. Short historical passages begin each chapter. It's appropriate for 2nd year or 3rd year math college students after they have taken college algebra and college geometry in order to work on many of the problems in the book. The great thing is you can find many of the solutions to the problems online from other websites b/c many colleges work on the problems presented in this book.

However, some of the author's solutions or explanations provided in the book were a little bit beyond me. I was always missing 1 or 2 pieces of information to see how the author carried out his reasoning and it took me a long time or still left unknown how he reached at a few of the solutions. The book is like a collection of puzzles from history. Some of the problems will be interesting or unappealing.
The book recommends for it to be studied as a year long course of study and I can see why. It's really important to have studied the college level math courses in order to work through the problems.

I am using this book in History of Mathematical Ideas course from math department. The book starts with ancient number system in different cultures and advances chronologically. It is fairly narrative, but is classic textbook for math history class.

My copy arrived much earlier than expected and it was almost new copy. I am happy with this purchase.

This is a very thorough look at the topic. Some of the cultural essays are not modern, but do no harm. Actual number problems are given as well as suggested problem studies.

What Maths taught in Schools/ claases is a "distillate" of work done by earlier passionate persons over decades/centuries. To get a better understanding who/when/how/why/where the "distillate" came, Everyone should read- spare some time- to look at the history of the origin of that result. This is a readable book to quench that thrust.Fortunately i could get hold of this book now.[june'17] Very enriching.
