Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

This book is known for its engaging style and for the many current examples of human service practitioners at work, which makes it a top seller in its market. It offers a historical context of the field of human services, insights into the overall social welfare field, and concrete descriptions of how primary intervention strategies are put into daily practice in human service agencies.

It provides a well-rounded look at the many options offered in the field of human services, and aims to prepare entry level human service workers for future careers. There is a strong multicultural emphasis. Social welfare chapter (Ch. 6) is completely revised to reflect the new Welfare Reform Act (TANF). Incorporates a new section on managed care included in the case management chapter (Ch. 9). Presents new material on the use of computers and the Internet in social agencies in the planning chapter (Ch. 11).

For practitioners of human services and/or social work. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Reading requirement for Sociology class... as silly as it sounds, I don't like the feel of this book... it is hard and almost crusty feeling... when you open the book the spine cracks and pages fall out. I think the material is practical for the field but unless you just need a printed book to survive, I recommend getting the electronic version.

Alot of page highlights, but no pages missing.
There was also alot of weird, brown sticky stuff on the cover and spine but I managed to wipe it off with a damp cloth
I understand the condition is due to being used by 3 previous owners and the book is still useful.

It is a sad state of affairs when a required textbook for a college class is bent on taking a political stance instead of providing unbiased facts on both sides of the political spectrum. It is quite safe to say that ALL political parties create policies that have negative effects, whether they be intentional or not and it is not appropriate in this venue to claim otherwise. While it is well-written and includes very interesting examples, it is so peppered with political biases that it is more like reading a political debate than a text. This book is an example of indoctrination at its best. What really makes this sad is that social work (and human services)is a field that operates on respecting and valuing the differences of one another and here this book implies that conservatives are "absurd, draconian, conspiracy theorists etc. (Yes, it really says that)" Way to respect and value others. Believe it or not, Betty Reid Mandell and Barbara Schram, conservatives are people too who deserve to be respected. These authors are quite a disappointment. This book should be banned from universities.

This book is amazing and good reading. For it to be a thick book I found that it wasn't heavy at all like most books this size. The only draw back is that it is paperback which creates folded edges and cover. I am thoroughly satisfy with my purchase and the timeliness inwhich I received it.

The book is very educational and updated to reflect our current times. I received it quickly and in wonderful, almost new, condition. I purchased it for a college class, however because I am earning my degree in social work I found this book incredibly useful.

I am very happy with my purchase and the speedy service.

I am currently taking a course with this book as required reading. The book is very well organized, well written, and easy to read, however, the reason I only give 2 stars is because this book is NOT objective in its approach to teaching the material. The authors clearly would like to see the USA become a socialistic state with funding for welfare programs to go through the roof. It is obvious that they would like the government to be in charge of redistributing the money successful people have made to people who have not been so fortunate.

I'm interested in a less subjective view of Human Services. I didn't take this class to listen to a rant against Republicans.

There is a ton of information in this text. I do think it is entirely too wordy! I understand that a text needs to give information and examples but this text could have been a bit more direct.
