This is epistemology from the objectivist viewpoint. Ayn Rand mainly covers the various aspect of concepts, from their formation to their critical use in human cognition. She demonstrates the importance of objectivity and the disastrous results that inevitably follow if other methods are tried. Although brief, the book covers fundamental concepts and clearly shows the rational explanations which support Rand's viewpoints.
Ayn Rand has a truly one of a kind mind and her focus and intelligence are unmatched. Her theories are fascinating and it is too bad more people do not examine them for themselves. She is a polarizing figure (as the extremity of the views, 1 or 5 stars, show) so I don't think my review will sway people one way or the other, but it is significant to see other fields, such as psychology and the science of expertise starting to recognize the importance of concepts in human life.
Highly recommend this book. Her insight and clarity make all of her writings worth reading. It's only too bad she only devoted less than 90 pages to such an important topic. Also, the expanded edition is great because it includes numerous questions from follow on seminars she gave. The questions help the reader understand the topics better and also show insight to Rand's thinking methods.

About the Author
Born February 2, 1905, Ayn Rand published her first novel, We the Living, in 1936. Anthem followed in 1938. It was with the publication of The Fountainhead (1943) and Atlas Shrugged (1957) that she achieved her spectacular success. Rand’s unique philosophy, Objectivism, has gained a worldwide audience. The fundamentals of her philosophy are put forth in three nonfiction books, Introduction to Objectivist Epistemology, The Virtues of Selfishness, and Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal. They are all available in Signet editions, as is the magnificent statement of her artistic credo, The Romantic Manifesto.

Make no mistake. This short but dense book is worth reading and re-reading as many times as necessary until you download and install this new operating system in your mind. Suppose you want to understand how the process of how knowledge works read this book. Your output (ideas, communication, work, projects, products, services) can improve substantially and exponentially. If you have survived public school's torture, do your mind a favor and give it the vital nutrition it needs to uninstall the aimless, foggy, noisy, zombie-like state. I am a young rational animal, and I can not recommend this book enough. It will protect you against attacks on your mind from all enemies. It is not an easy read, but neither is working out and improving your health. But it is worth the struggle. I hope you get a software upgrade too! Cheers

If you are at that point in your life where the thought of watching soap operas or "reality" TV physically makes you sick, this book will speak to you and you will feel like at last someone, possibly the first person ever, finally gets you. Ayn Rand, though long deceased was quite possibly the most intelligent person to ever live. That being said, many people will find out that she was a well know Atheist and immediately shut down any of her ideas and ideologies. TAKE WHAT YOU CAN USE AND LEAVE THE REST! No where in this book does Ayn Rand try to convert you to Atheism!!! This is a book of COMMON SENSE! NOT RELIGION!! I promise you! This book changed me life and possibly saved it in a time when I allowed emotions to run my life instead of me keeping my emotions in check by using logic and reason. This book explains why we SHOULD be making decisions using logic and reason instead of emotions. If you are suffering from anxiety, depression, PTSD or any other form of emotional based distress, this book will help you.

This is real philosophy presented as a lowest common denominator and yet remain "real philosophy". Its thesis are presented on a scale of importance to human living, not of detached academic abstraction - although THAT IS an important and necessary process in anything to be considered a "real" science. "Existence exists" is presented plainly as an Aristotelian "indemonstrable First Principle" as something simply self-evident - which it is - but without the explanation of how controversial it is in contemporary thinking which does not at all - for the most part - understand what an "axiom" is supposed to be.

I started following Ayn Rand in the early 60’s. I met Nathaniel Brandon once. Over the years I came to follow her reasoning, but disagreed with her conclusions about the existsnce of God. I am rereading this book so I don’t misquote her actual words.

Notwithstanding your opinion about Ayn Rand, the ideas in this book give one a clear understanding how reason figures in our lives.
Notwithstanding you opinion about how emotion can affect the application of reason in solving problems, Ayn Rand's epistemology is the gold standard in understanding the role of reason.
I give the book to the children in my extended family when they reach the milestone of passing from adolescence to adulthood.

I learned about Epistemology and specifically the Objectist’s Epistemology of knowledge.
The book can be difficult but I took notes and took my time and finished it feeling confident.

Great book. Sadly, Did not like that a 5$ coupon was not applied from a Amazon email 7 day offer. I linked to amazon via the emailing, but it still didn't apply the 5$ coupon. Sad.

An important work for those who wish to understand the link between reality and objectivist philosophy.

Brilliant. Peikoff by his own admission is a candle next to Rand's Super nova, but he makes the work of a genius more available because of that trait. I'm not even certain that Peikoff really understands every facet of Rand's brilliant mind, but he certainly gets her in more ways than most of us. He puts on the sunglasses so that we at least can glimpse the structure, if not the fine detail, or the eloquence of its sum.
However, a word of warning, diving into objectivism isn't something anyone should do without the necessary back ground to understand the context. The world generally sees Rand as a monster, those that have read Atlas Shrugged and declare themselves Randian acolytes probably haven't a clue about the brilliance of the philosophy. Rand herself would tell any acolyte that they must not accept at face value the value of any work, particularly hers. If you don't grasp objectivism it's perfectly understandable because it is almost alien, it inverts thousands of years of philosophy in order to come up with a very radical solution. The solution is every bit as important as Einsteins field equations, but, unlike Einstein she does not have the luxury of creating something that only effects the ideas of a tiny few who grasp the significance of a theory. Objectivism applies to everyone, in every way possible and that is a deeply polarising philosophy in a world which has not yet asked the question 'why it should man need a moral code' ? and if he requires one then how does he begin to know what it should be ? this is the field of ethics and it is a scientific field of study, not simply one of whimsical discussion.

I love reading Ayn Rand... she is very clear and concise... I wish I would have gotten her original book it was so much more smaller and inviting... the idea of a philosopher that is short, brief and to the point... is what made the original smaller book so appealing... you either agree or disagree... but unlike other philosophers, there is no way you can not understand what is being said...

If you're into BS philosophy this book is for you

I am a big fan of Ayn Rand novel and some other book (the romantic manifesto or Philosophy who need it for example).
But this book is about BS philosophy not real one.
If you like book talking about what is a measure ? What is a definition ? What is a concept ? You will definitely love this book. But if you like real subject instead (like politics, economics, arts, etc) you will hate this book

Rand should stick to fiction , this was very dry and incredibly boring . Nothing new and she kept repeating basically the same thing over and over .
