The handbook edited by prof. Ebeling is a good resource to introduce the reliability problems.
The book has a mathematical structure, with very detailed demostrations of relations and formulas. However, differently from the main books treating the argument, Ebeling introduces a large number of solved exercises with practical cases.
However, the text, for me, it has two limitations. One minor and one major.
The first one is the absence to references to international standards of reliability (IEC 61508, IEC 61511, EN ISO 13849-1, etc.). But this is not very important.
The second one is most important: at the end of every chapter are suggested a lot of number of exercise WITHOUT solution. The solution manual is not available, for consultants, designers and engineers outside of academia, even for a fee. This is a ENORMOUS limit of the text, because most of the exercises have implications for the solution of technical and practical cases. And without these solutions, the text lacks a very important part, useful for all readers who use it for work, outside the University.

This book was as syllabus requirement and we did not use it at all during the semester except for one week where we read one chapter out this entire book. For the money spent for it, we sure did not make great use of it. This book was hard to understand because there are just a bunch of words that probably have no meaning if you have no clue what the subject matter is about. The print is extremely small as well. Maybe that is why we did not use it very much in class. However, I am using it as a reference for my thesis as it does contain some good content on reliability. I have been reading it off and on but I will have to tackle the chapters in several settings at a time because if I read too much of it at one time I will find it boring and get nothing out of it. This is a good reference book but I don't recommend it for a syllabus requirement for a semester class if it will not be read from beginning to end.

This textbook is very well-written and quite comprehensive. It also has great practice problems that you can work on to understand the material. HOWEVER, the textbook does not contain an answer key in the back. A call to the publisher (Waveland Press) made me aware that the answer key is only available to instructors in colleges if they can proove that they are using this book as the class textbook. To me this is a rip-off, because normally publishers provide answer keys upon request. In Summary: Great book, terrible publisher. Waveland Press sucks! How am I supposed to self-study without the answers???!!!

I already had some reliability related books and was intrigued by the claim of this one being more practical info. I didn't really feel this was the case after glancing through the book. I already own Accelerated Testing: A Practitioner's Guide to Accelerated And Reliability Testing by Dodson & Schwab. I found "Accelerated Testing..." more readable and applicable to learning about reliability and various models used in performing accelerated testing. Had the publisher allowed viewing inside the book online, i probably would have figured out it wasn't what it's cracked up to be. Amazon, as always, graciously let me return it.

I have borrowed this text from a classmate as I am studying these topics at the graduate level. In the first few chapters, I found the book has a cluttered and disorganized feel that leaves you turning pages in search of the facts and identities that you are seeking for. The examples seem to be repetitive in the sense that they are deliberately narrow in demonstration for the purpose of making the problems at the end of the chapter more difficult, which is absolutely needless and is detrimental to modern methods of effective student learning. I would not recommend using this for any class.

Also, it is a typical textbook. They are obligated to have homework problems and in order to make them more challenging, useful scenarios and examples are omitted. If you are teaching a class and don't want to author your own assignments, maybe this is for you. But I would appreciate seeing a broad collection of scenarios without having to to find out that the procedure I'm looking for is an exercise left for the reader.

This is a great book to get introduced to the field of Reliability Engineering and Maintainability concepts. The author gives practical examples and real life situations where reliability can be applied. What I liked the most about the book is they derived each formula and give insights into the usage - this gives a lot of clarity in understanding. For example, concepts like MTTF, Reliability relation to Failure distribution etc are not just mentioned, but derived systematically. One off-side could be that it takes longer time to chug with the mathematics, but at same time gives a thorough theoretical grounding. Some sections like Systems Reliability and Markov transition models could have been made better in my opinion. Also, if the data used is available via internet, would be useful - since I have the older edition, am assuming this must be taken care of with the latest edition. Overall, this is a good read though would suggest to complement the material presented with other texts.
