Format: Paperback
One of those rare books that care about the 'why' and not only the 'how'. Put together by Kiefer's colleagues based on his lecture notes after his death, this nice little book starts with explaining the basics, starting from how statistics and probability are related, what we mean by an experiment, sample, defines the basic problems in statistics and then goes on providing a brief glimpse at the most fundamental results. Basic background in probability theory is required, as well as some patience. The book has many examples illustrating the topics discussed. The format is different from the usual math textbook format: There is more emphasis on discussing ideas and only the most important results are stated as theorems. The book is warmly recommended for anyone who wants to understand the pros and cons of different methods and approaches in statistics, or the principles of constructing statistical procedures. Especially recommended for mathematicians with a background in probability. Caveat: This is not a cookbook, though the many examples will also teach you the most frequently used statistical procedures.
