I own several descriptive books on tarot, this is the best book I have found to understand the meaning and use of each tarot card. The descriptions are more useful than any other book I have read on the card meanings. For the very first time, I was able to do a very accurate reading with this book as reference. When I compared the other books, they all seemed to have the exact same description, no difference between them; Pictorial Key to the Tarot, The Tarot Revealed, and A Complete Guide to Tarot. I would recommend this book as your first book to tarot.

I bought this book in a spiritual bookstore...it was part of a set, The Complete Tarot Kit and it is the best reference I've found on the tarot for beginners. I have had the kit for about a year, but didn't take it seriously until about 5 months ago. I have just about worn this book out and plan on purchasing a replacement in the near future.

Susan's explaination of the tarot for both decks is phenomenal...I can't tell you how pleased I've been with it!

It's a MUST BUY for anyone interesting in learning the tarot!

I'm rather disappointed with this book. While there ARE a lot of illustrations, there is not that much text. The author gives some surprising interpretations in some cases. For example, with the Two of Swords, she states that "this card does not mean indecision or being pulled in two directions." Well, it doesn't necessarily mean that, but it certainly CAN mean that. In fact, many classic works on Tarot describe this card's meanings to include the idea of a stalemate, with the blindfold contributing the idea that the woman in the picture can't see the solution to her dilemma, and the rocks in the sea indicate potential obstacles or dangers to be skilfully navigated. Yet, the author's divinatory meaning is: "Peace of mind and harmonious balance." I find that a bit limiting, especially since swords often indicate conflict, and "balance" does not always equal harmony, it can mean stagnation or equal opposing forces.

Sometimes she illustrates a card using the Crowley deck, sometimes Waite-Rider, sometimes both. Much of the text is given to describing the cards' appearance, which the reader can see for his or herself, with only a few short comments on the actual meaning. A variety of spreads are given, but I don't think she gives nearly enough detail on card meanings for a reader to do any kind of in-depth spread using this book.

I'd recommend Joan Bunning's book, or the books by Eden Gray, as two other options for beginners. If this were my first book, I'd find it frustrating.

This is a really solid intro. When people ask me where to start, this is the book I steer them towards. Really accessible and has an engaging layout. This enables adept readings without allowing for intimidation.

This book is the most comprehensive, user friendly book about the basics of Tarot that you will ever find. It's pages are beautifully illustrated and full of simple yet insightful explanation for each card in a Tarot deck while providing a clear understanding of how to readily apply the information when doing a reading. It is so thorough and accessible that I have not needed to consult any other Tarot book since picking this one up. And I have become a pretty good card reader myself thanks to the author's knowledgeable instruction. I highly recommend it.

I'm a newbie to tarot. Love this book and use it almost daily as I learn the cards. Her explanation of each card is very easy to understand (but not superficial) and without any frightening interpretations (as I've sometimes found with other tarot guides).
I love that there's a section with a "quick reference" guide to each card and their meaning, as well as a lot of different spreads to try out and creative ways to use the tarot cards aside from readings.

This book was recommended to me by a girl in the New Age shop in my area. I mentioned that I was always curious about how the Tarot worked and this is what she suggested.

If you always wondered what the stuff on the cards meant this book will give you the low down without being too intimidating. You don't even have to own any cards, there are pictures throughout the book. Its very interesting!! I enjoyed it, the pictures are wonderful to look a while you read :)

I've used this Tarot book for over 15 years, and have bought multiple copies for friends. It is the most understandable book I've read for really "getting" the cards. It has a few pages devoted to explaining the "Moon" card, since this is a tricky one to understand. It also has spreads in the back, and Tarot numerology. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
