This book is exactly as advertised. It's a baby book about calculus and it's awesome! I bought it for my young nephew and love reading it to him. It's well written, amusing and adorable. If you are a math geek or just want a unique gift for a baby/toddler this is a great choice.

As was bound to happen, some reviewers are complaining because the book is not helping them learn calculus. I'm guessing they are also angry that Dr. Seuss' book Green Eggs and Ham did not actually teach them how to prepare said green eggs and ham. People, it's a baby book for goodness sake.

This is a good math intro for young children, but I take issue with the title. There's only a tiny bit of calculus that is addressed (derivatives) with most of the book focusing on algebra and some trigonometry. Be aware of this when buying; the book may be too easy for those children ready to tackle calculus head on.

My hubby just got a PHD in applied math and thought this would be a cute thing for him to have for our 3 year old and our new baby. My husband really liked the math (though he said the illustrations were pretty crappy - I told him he should make his own book then!) and even exclaimed they even have natural limits!
My 3 year old thinks its a fun story and talks about how poor "x" is very sad b/c the other numbers made fun of him, until he found a good play friend in "f". He especially likes them swimming in the pool made by the concavity.

Great gift!

I am an electrical engineer and research scientist, and in my occupation, calculus is a mathematical tool that we use daily. When my small son was born, I wanted him to immediately begin hearing words like, derivative, limit, integral, vector, line integral, gradient, etc..... Of course as a ten month old or a three year old, he would not fully appreciate the concepts behind the words, but he would become familiar with hearing them and not perceiving them as something that one should be afraid of.
I purchased this book for him when he was eight months old and even now that he is five years old, we still look at it once every few weeks. The book is filled with nice simple colorful pictures to capture an infant's attention followed by nice clear font and lettering. All of the main concepts of calculus are covered using clear pictures which a small child will naturally be drawn to examine. If you are someone familiar with mathematics, then by reading the book and explaining some of the colorful pictures, even a two or three year old can begin to form simple ideas that represent the concept of a limit, or a derivative or the summation process of an integral. My five year old is not a profoundly gifted child with a 210 IQ but he already knows what a derivative represents and what happens when something moves to a limit at infinity. And hopefully, now that he has those ideas down, when he is ready to dive into true calculus as an older child, he will see it as a topic that is both familiar and easy.
Will this book make your child more intelligent or raise their ability to understand mathematics? No, it will not.

My five-year-old really enjoys reading this, even though she doesn't understand the math. It's an alphabet story - X has very few friends, but F shows X that when they play together as f(x) they can meet all the letters of the alphabet! Each letter and term is accompanied by the appropriate graph (*a*bsolute value, *e*xponential, *p*arabolic, etc.) on through the alphabet. At the end X has lots of friends.

This is a paperback book with simple, vibrant colors and drawings. Humorously written and not too complicated. I bought this as a gift for my newborn nephew whose parents are both engineers. I think this is going to be the hit of Christmas in our house. Also, for kids, if they've seen math like this their whole lives, they won't be afraid of it when then get to algebra, pre-calc, etc when they get to high school. Kudos to the author!

The other day I was looking at a stock chart and she points at the screen and exclaims, "boundless!".

If they made a series out of this, I would buy every one. Starting with classical mechanics please.

I like this book as a stealthy way to introduce mathematical concepts to children at an early age. However, this is not appropriate for infants because it's a simple paperback book, not printed on harder/thicker stock. I would say that this is ideal for the 3-5 year old child that's learning to read because it ties in a simple story that they can follow along with.
