Let's face it: a movie in which Louise Fletcher eats a bullfrog can't be all that bad. Indeed, Tobe Hooper's remake of the 1953 classic Invaders from Mars is a total hoot, remaining loyal to the original while serving up a kaleidoscopic orgy of fang-toothed beasties, dazzling pyrotechnics, and enough wretched dialogue to choke its enthusiastic cast. If anything, Hooper's too enamored of the original, and with amateur actor Hunter Carson (Paris, Texas) as the boy-who-cried-Martian, he can't sustain the original's eerily paranoid atmosphere. This big-budget Invaders compensates with campy humor (especially from evil schoolmarm Fletcher) and cool special effects by Star Wars innovator John Dykstra. Carson's real-life mom (Karen Black) plays the school nurse who believes the boy's warning of invasion, and Jimmy Hunt--who played the kid in the original--brings everything full circle as a Martian-possessed policeman. Watch the original, then enjoy this less effective but equally entertaining remake. --Jeff Shannon

Regarding "Invaders ..", the issue therefore is the mixing of an intriguing premise, Hooper's immense talents for knowing and depicting evil, with comedic elements involving ridiculous or wildly improbable situations. The amalgam did not work. The film was never really funny, or even genuinely scary though it very well could have been considering Hooper's brilliance.
Perhaps the film could have transitioned into a mild lampoon or farce, such as the later "The People Under the Stairs" of Wes Craven, J. Carpenter's conterminal "They Live" (1987), or D. A. Coscarelli's wildly adult "Bubba-Hotep" (2003), however, the script, characters and the earnestness of "Invaders... " prevents this. Further though, these films were not horror. My conclusion here is that Horror-Farce is in a manner conceivable, yet Horror-Comedy is not. The intellectual air and dryness of Satire melds much better with Horror as compared with straightforward humor.
The great horror films of Hooper's, besides "Texas Chainsaw...", are, in time, "Salem's Lot", "Poltergeist", and "Lifeforce". All tend to be graphic, adult works, bordering on X, and even "Invaders.." is no exception. "Texas Chainsaw...", btw, is another successful integration of horror and farce: a film that pokes fun at horror films while it being itself a horror film. A difficult integration, but occasionally achieved, yet not here in "Invaders..."
A Horror-cum-Farce will not be anywhere near as frightening as straightforward horror, nonetheless, a few jolts will be duly possible. I recommend this film though, especially if you are a fan of the genre, or of Mr. Hooper.
The Players: A kid and a school nurse vs. a huge brain on the end of a tongue-like appendage and a small group of T-Rex caricatures. [you know, where they draw your head extra big and your body tiny] They look like a T-Rex head on an ape's body. There's your good vs evil. Kid and his nurse against brain and T-Rex bobbleheads.
The Story: It wasn't so much an invasion as it was a terrorist act. They apparently came to stop our exploration of Mars, their home planet. The scheme was to infiltrate the community and blow up the rocket scheduled for launch. They chose the landing site because there's some connection to their power source and copper.
The Martians wanted to avoid knowledge of their existence. Why isn't clear. So their plan was to sneak in, destroy our space program and sneak out; leaving us wondering what happened. But some kid screws it up.
I had too much disbelief to enjoy this. An enormous spacecraft somehow burrows into the ground. From this craft numerous tunnels go out like an ant colony. Where did all the dirt go? Was it vaporized? What were the tunnels for? Were they mining copper? One terminated at the grade school. Why? Convenient to the plot, no other reason.
There was an area over the spacecraft that was used to trap humans. These individuals had a hat pin inserted into the base of their neck, [rather than the base of the brain] which gave the big brain control over them. It isn't clear if the T-Rex things ran any equipment or if it was all done by the brain. The device used to insert the hatpins could not be loaded by a Martian. Why does it start so far from the insertion point and take sooo long to get there? Are they all Martians or is the big brain the Martian and the others just creatures, like dogs, from the planet? With a T-Rex head, I would assume they are carnivors; as is evidenced by one of them eating Nurse Ratched. They are extremely slow and clumsy. Nurse Ratched had to fall into its open mouth to be eaten. What do they eat back on Mars? What are they eating now? Are there stores of canned hams like Leela feeds Nibbler?
The first ending is cheesy. The second is worse.
