OPINION: I was interested in this story and the characters although I didn't feel that there was enough to distinguish it from similar Palmer books. The mystery of what was threatening Carlie was interesting, but there were some parts that were too incredible to be believed. Despite this, I liked how Carson and Carlie had a relationship that was not based on physical attraction alone. This is the kind of book that is adequate for a one time read but doesn't have staying power that makes a reader think of the characters or story and want to return again.
WORTH MENTIONING: Palmer is still writing about characters with traditional morals and the only sex is within the bounds of marriage.
FINAL DECISION: This book was an adequate one time read, but there was nothing in the story to elevate it to a read again book.
CONNECTED BOOKS: INVINCIBLE is connected both to the Long, Tall Texans series and also the Wyoming Men series. This book can be read independent of those books, but there are recurring characters.
STAR RATING: I give this book 3.5 stars.
So, I say this with great reluctance...I was so bored by this book that I haven't even finished it. Maybe it's because I'm significantly older than I was when I began reading Ms. Palmer's book (early 20's) and have aged (and hopefully matured) but I can't help but notice that all the females in her books are young, (nearly) virginal, sassy yet shy heroine who's pureness and goodness always work to tame even the most hardened, jaded rogue. And all the men are big, jaded, cold-hearted, merciless, ruthless but putty in the heroine's tiny, delicate hands.
He always tries to 'run' her off because she's too 'good' for him but she, in her virginal purity, manages to 'tame' him...and they live happily ever after.
Again, maybe it's because I'm older (and hopefully wiser) but I would dearly love to see Ms. Palmer (or any long-standing writer) write a book about an older woman (30/40's) who can kick ass and does the rescuing.
Sure women like to imagine themselves as princesses rescued by the prince, but some of us princesses know that in the real world, we either have to rescue ourselves or rescue the prince.
