"Enlightenment Now: The Case for Reason, Science, Humanism, and Progress"
Is the world really falling apart? Is the ideal of progress obsolete? Cognitive scientist and public intellectual Steven Pinker urges us to step back from the gory headlines and prophecies of doom, and instead, follow the data: In seventy-five jaw-dropping graphs, Pinker shows that life, health, prosperity, safety, peace, knowledge, and happiness are on the rise. Dear Seth King,
Thank you. For this book. For writing boldly and without reservation. For your bravery in doing something different and heartbreaking and hopeful and powerful. For sharing this piece of yourself and your story with us.
Thank you for giving me Summer. And Cooper. For keeping them true to who they were- a bit broken but in the most beautiful way. For giving them joy and purpose despite the pain. For letting them love- fears, faults and all. For giving them a love that transcended time and life and even death.
Thank you for using your words for good. They moved me to tears more than I want to admit. They changed me. They broke me down and healed something in me that I didn't even know was broken. Thank you for making me look up and smile (which for someone in NYC is a big feat). For making me want to be a better version of myself, the best version of myself. There is no thank you big enough for that.
Please, I am begging you as a reader, a lover of the written word to pick up this book. It's message is one everybody needs to experience and feel. I am writing this review with tears in my eyes (happy, heartfelt tears). Invincible Summer will give you more than one OMG moment and hopefully, like it did for me, it will bring some peace to your soul. I could rattle on and on and on but I won't. Seth King delivered a winner or epic proportions. This book is, hands down, one of the best I have ever read. Just read it and bask in the beautiful, wonderful power of love.
I thought that I was prepared for this book. I thought I knew the journey we were about to embark on. We would check in with Cooper and his broken heart and then follow him as he mends it. A simple, beautiful love story. Boy was I wrong! Don't misunderstand me - you still check in on Cooper in all his beautiful brokenness, you still get a love story - but the journey there is unlike anything you have read before.
Seth King's story, his words and thoughts blew me out of the water. Where TSR touched me in a way no other book has and likely ever will because of my similarities to Summer, Invincible Summer struck a whole different chord. As the book deals with lessons on life, death and ultimately love I couldn't help but think about how those lessons apply to my own life. As I have had more than a couple close calls with death and fight each and every day to survive - life and love is something I hold as very precious to me. But it has always been more of an abstract concept in my head and not one I tend to verbalize too often. Because really, who wants to sit there and talk about such topics with me ;) But this book puts forth the concepts so eloquently, so movingly - you will feel every word deep within you.
This book was so different than anything I have read. It is just beautiful. It will make you stop and think - about those around you, those you love, those you have lost, those you forget to see as you walk through your daily life. It is a book about life and love. And it will challenge you to think about your life and if you are living it as fully and with as much love as you wish. I urge you to go out and #1Click this now!
I received a complimentary copy of Invincible Summer in exchange for my honest review.
I read 'Invincible Summer' thinking it was Coopers story, a follow on book that would make me cry and my heart would break like in TSR. I was so wrong. Invincible Summer is in a whole new ballpark. Yes, I cried, but it was different to the last book. I cried because it all felt so real. It gave me closure and to revisit some of the scenes for TSR brought back all those memories. I felt that Summer and Cooper were my friends and it was truly happening to them, that I was on this ride with them and I wanted to cherish every part of their story.
It is a book like no other I’ve ever read before and I loved every single page.
While reading it, I felt like I was on a journey. It made me remember my loved ones that have passed on and had me hoping that what this brilliant author has written, is even a tiny bit true. I kept reading, thinking and hoping that there is life after death. That when we die, we can still visit our family left on earth. That we get to see each other again when our time here has come to an end.
I was talking to a lady recently that lost her 4yo son in a tragic accident a few years ago and she keeps getting signs that he is still with her. I was reading certain parts of this book and the hair on my neck and arms would all stand on end, because the conversation with my friend was almost identical to what Seth has written. I had many moments like this while reading the book and I highlighted more paragraphs and quotes than I ever have before.
I think everyone, no matter what genre they enjoy, will love ‘Invincible Summer’. In fact, I think it’s a book the world needs to read. It puts everything that we take for granted into perspective and for that I thank Seth King for making me see things and absorb things that I normally wouldn’t take the time to truly appreciate and cherish.
Seth, you have a gift for writing and I hope that you continue to give us these stories that open up a whole new world to us. I will continue to follow your work and support you through everything you do. You deserve all the success in the world.
* You should read ‘The Summer Remains’ first to understand the background of Summer and Coopers story.
