Invisible Doctrine: The Secret History of Neoliberalism Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 253 ratings

#1 SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER • A “fantastic” (Mark Ruffalo), fiercely argued takedown of neoliberalism that not only defines this slippery concept but connects it to the climate crisis, poverty, and fascism—and shows us how to fight back.

“Incisive, illuminating, eye-opening—an unsparing anatomy of the great ideological beast stalking our times, often whispered about and yet never so clearly in view.”—David Wallace-Wells, author of The Uninhabitable Earth

Neoliberalism is the dominant ideology of our time. It shapes us in countless ways, yet most of us struggle to articulate what it is. Worse, we have been persuaded to accept this extreme creed as a kind of natural law. In
Invisible Doctrine, journalist George Monbiot and filmmaker Peter Hutchison shatter this myth. They show how a fringe philosophy in the 1930s—championing competition as the defining feature of humankind—was systematically hijacked by a group of wealthy elites, determined to guard their fortunes and power. Think tanks, corporations, the media, university departments and politicians were all deployed to promote the idea that people are consumers, rather than citizens.

One of the most pernicious effects has been to make our various crises—from climate disasters to economic crashes, from the degradation of public services to rampant child poverty—seem unrelated. In fact, they have all been exacerbated by the “invisible doctrine,” which subordinates democracy to the power of money. Monbiot and Hutchison connect the dots—and trace a direct line from neoliberalism to fascism, which preys on people’s hopelessness and desperation.

Speaking out against the fairy tale of capitalism and populist conspiracy theories, Monbiot and Hutchison lay the groundwork for a new politics, one based on truly participatory democracy and “private sufficiency, public luxury”: an inspiring vision that could help bring the neoliberal era to an end.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Embraced by Democrats and Republicans, Conservatives and Labour, neoliberalism is simultaneously all-encompassing and seldom, if ever, explicitly named. Guardian columnist George Monbiot and filmmaker Peter Hutchison have set out to lift the veil on this ‘invisible doctrine.’ The result is a passionate, informed polemic that is short but packed with detail and incisive analysis.”The Guardian

“Incisive, illuminating, eye-opening—an unsparing anatomy of the great ideological beast stalking our times, often whispered about and yet never so clearly in view.”
—David Wallace-Wells, author of The Uninhabitable Earth

“If you want to know how neoliberals spread the dangerous lie that their ideas were new, liberal, and commonsensical,
Invisible Doctrine is everything you need. Monbiot and Hutchison have written the definitive short history of the neoliberal confidence trick.”—Yanis Varoufakis, former finance minister of Greece and author of Adults in the Room

“A powerful, punchy exposé of the invisible powers that block the road to human and planetary well-being—a must-read for everyone who seeks a better alternative to the crises that threaten to overwhelm us.”
—Kate Pickett, co-author of The Spirit Level

“Read it, get angry, demand better!”
—Gaia Vince, author of Nomad Century

“An urgent unmasking of some of the most powerful and insidious yet overlooked ideas of our era.
Invisible Doctrine is a fantastic start for anyone who wants to know why politics as we understand it does not work for our communities or our planet—and what kind of politics just might.”—Olúfẹ́mi O. Táíwò, author of Elite Capture

“A vigorous analysis . . . a damning, persuasive critique of neoliberalism.”
Kirkus Reviews

“This is the right moment for this gem of a book. A few years ago, most people couldn’t have quite heard the argument; a few years from now, on this overheating planet, it will be too late for it to matter. But we can still act—as long as we do it together.”
—Bill McKibben, author of The End of Nature

“Explosive and beautifully told . . . These truths can set us free from the lie that this is the only way the world can be.”
—Danny Dorling, author of Inequality and the 1%

The author writes in a very easy to read way that is engaging and interesting. By exposing the tenants, fallacies, and effects of neoliberalism the author help to clarify why the rich are getting richer and the rest are suffering. The neoliberal view is that free market capitalism provides an environment in which the talented and smart get rich while the stupid and incapable become poor. However, the truth is that ruthless despicable psychopathic narcissists manipulate and claw their way to the top while exploiting good honest people who are crushed and pushed down. Rather than power corrupting people, it appears that corrupt people ruthlessly obtain power by stepping on the kind hearted talented workers.

A MUST READ! TRIGGER WARNING: This book will make you angry, whatever your politics or position. Those toward one end of the spectrum will be angry at the exposure and characterization of their cherished agenda; those at the other end will be angry at the deception and destruction wrought by neoliberalism, whether under this or any other name.

This slim, simple, yet sophisticated book connects the dots of the dilemmas facing the modern world and traces many of them to a common collection of ideologies, practices, and policies under the often disowned banner of neoliberalism. In meticulously documented detail, the writers show how we got into contemporary crises in rising economic inequality, looming environmental disaster, and existential threats to democracy and the rule of law. But this is not merely a screed or a cry of doom. The book may not offer much in the way of answers, certainly not easy ones, but it does point in the right direction, toward an exit and a way forward.

I learned a lot from this infuriating and inspiring book. Every serious citizen should read it.

Read this book if, when you saw the title, you thought to yourself: “Neoliberalism. What is that? I’ve heard it said hundreds of times and I think I have a vague idea, but I’m not 100% sure.” It’s okay not to know. This book is a quick, zippy read and will “tear down the cloak of invisibility” and show you why you feel ill-at-ease on a daily basis but aren’t sure why.

The point of this book is not to be the most in-depth read. This is the kind of book that everyone who is fed-up, scared, and trying hard to repress their feelings of anxiety about their future should read so that first, we know what is happening, in clear, concise language and second, we start to believe it doesn’t have to be this way.

George Monbiot is my hero.

You know what you know. Now read what it’s called and who’s funding it. Read how from 1984 to July 1, 2024 rich people have been trying to get this exact moment done. SCOTUS was years in the making by a few Koch and Mellon funded groups.
Read it and understand why they are keeping Biden in and exactly how Clinton ushered in 2008 financial crisis. Rage at the Machine. You weren’t crazy to think this….

Just started reading this book and nodding my head and saying "mmm hmmm!". Seriously, recommending this to all my friends so they can understand the political dialogue going round --class and culture warfare.

It misses the mark and falls into the fetish view of capitalism trap.

As Buick & Crump say: Capitalism is defined as

"1. Generalised commodity production, nearly all wealth being produced for sale on a market. 2. The investment of capital in production with a view to obtaining a monetary profit. 3. The exploitation of wage labour, the source of profit being the unpaid labour of the producers. 4. The regulation of production by the market via a competitive struggle for profits. 5. The accumulation of capital out of profits, leading to the expansion and development of the forces of production. 6. A single world economy."

This is the best book I've read so far this year. It's rare that the scales can fall from my eyes so completely.

I need a week to think about the ramifications before I devour it again.

Should be required reading for anyone who wants to vote in any election.
