Much overlooked by a somewhat misleading title, this small book contains bigger than life, funny, adventurous, mostly true tales from Alaska's Cook Inlet --- the deep water far north harbor and fishing village of Homer. These are not `tall tales,' but tall they are indeed, my own included. These are 1st party stories by local residents, old timers and specifically the Homer Writer's Group, sometimes calling themselves Kachemak Bay writers. You will particularly laugh at the story of the dynamite and the outhouse. Some of these things would get you thrown in jail anywhere else.
The misleading title comes from a stage production that has run for years under the name, "Invisible Ink." These same writers informally read their current or not so current works in a setting and manner similar to our regular bi-weekly meetings. The performances stage at Pier One Theater each year and are a favorite with local citizens. Jan Needham was and is the originator and director of the production and the title "Invisible Ink" is hers. The metaphorical meaning of the title alludes to the story line that is so clear in a night's sleep and so elusive or forgotten upon awakening in the morning. Joyce Port kindly edited this small jewel along with her own included stories in addition to her trilogy of books in progress on Africa.
There is an available 2 CD recording from one of these Pier One performances called "Alaskan Voices" with readings by the authors. I listen to some of these stories on a long drive to Anchorage. They are still funny after many listening. Clancy Hughes [...]
