The Invisible String (The Invisible String, 1) Paperback – Picture Book, October 30, 2018
Purchase options and add-ons
Parents, educators, therapists, and social workers alike have declared The Invisible String the perfect tool for coping with all kinds of separation anxiety, loss, and grief. It's also been joyfully embraced as a year-round celebration of love--gifted at births, graduations, weddings, Valentine's Day, and beyond. In this relatable and reassuring contemporary classic, a mother tells her two children that they're all connected by an invisible string. "That's impossible!" the children insist, but still they want to know more: "What kind of string?" The answer is the simple truth that binds us all: An Invisible String made of love. Even though you can't see it with your eyes, you can feel it deep in your heart, and know that you are always connected to the ones you love. Does everybody have an Invisible String? How far does it reach? Does it ever go away? This heartwarming picture book for all ages explores questions about the intangible yet unbreakable connections between us, and opens up deeper conversations about love.
Recommended and adopted by parenting blogs, bereavement support groups, hospice centers, foster care and social service agencies, military library services, church groups, and educators, The Invisible String offers a very simple approach to overcoming loneliness, separation, or loss with an imaginative twist that children easily understand and embrace, and delivers a particularly compelling message in today's uncertain times. This special paperback edition includes vibrant new illustrations and an introduction from the author.

About the authors

Patrice Karst is the author of the bestselling, contemporary classic children’s (and adults’!) book The Invisible String, which has sold over 2 million copies and been translated into twenty languages. It is the story of the String (made out of love!) that connects us all.
The Invisible String book series offers children a tangible understanding of love and teaches the world about the String that “even though you can’t see it with your eyes, you can feel it in your heart and know that you are always connected to everyone you love.”
In addition to being shared by all ages as a gift for many of life’s milestone moments, it is also being used by schools, psychologists, hospices, grief groups, the military, hospitals, prison systems and countless organizations worldwide for any kind of loss or separation issues.
A leading title for healing, comfort, celebrations, bereavement and counseling of children and their families since its original publication in 2000, The Invisible String continues to soar because of its timeless message.
Patrice has been on a lifelong mission to share the message that this energy called love transcends time and space and is the most powerful force in all the universe.
Patrice has also written The Invisible Leash: An Invisible String Story Celebrating Love After the Loss of a Pet, The Invisible String Workbook: Creative Activities to Comfort, Calm and Connect, a therapeutic activity book co-written with Dana Wyss, Ph.D., The Invisible Web: An Invisible String Story Celebrating Love and Our Universal Connection, You Are Never Alone: An Invisible String Lullaby, The Invisible String Backpack, The Smile that Went Around the World and Ruby and Lonely. In 2025 How Jackson Found His Joy Again and The Invisible String Family Celebration will be released. And in February 2026- God Made Easy will also be released
Born in London, England, Patrice moved to the United States as a child, where she spent many a night pondering the meaning of life under the canopy of stars, and has been on a fascinating creative and spiritual journey ever since.
The single mother of Elijah (now grown) lives in Santa Barbara, California, where she is currently writing her memoir (and what a wild ride it has been!), working on more stories, and still gazing up in wonder at starry nights.
Patrice loves to hear from her readers!

Joanne is the award-winning illustrator of such books as Beautiful, Brave, Love and Hilde Cracks the Case series, Another Day as Emily and The Dancing Pancake by Eileen Spinelli and Peace, Baby! by Linda Ashman. She lives in Amsterdam with her family.
Now we are done with all the formality, let's get to the good stuff. I was born in Malaysia but grew up in Los Angeles. I've had all kinds of adventures, good, bad and the crazy and it had a big influence in my art since I was a very young kid. I love traveling and going to new places. Luckily I have a family who loves it just as much as I do. I am terrible at cooking but I love to eat and luckily my husband is a great cook. Photography, hiking in the mountains and being in nature are my favorite things to do. .
My favorite mediums are pen and pencil. I don't like using sketch books because it makes me feel confined to a space. Which also means, my house is full of loose sketches everywhere. I mean everywhere. My children are my greatest pride . Usually I don't talk this much because I'm an introvert but I think it's okay to share just a little bit of myself with the moms, dads and kids out there.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 14, 2025The Invisible String is a beautifully written and heartfelt book that teaches children (and adults) about the unbreakable connections we share with the people we love, even when we are apart. The story provides a comforting and reassuring message, making it perfect for children who experience separation anxiety, loss, or simply need a reminder that love transcends distance.
I recently read this book to my daughter’s class for her birthday, and it was an absolute hit! The children were engaged and excited to share their own “invisible strings,” creating a wonderful discussion about love and connection. The message resonated so deeply that I gifted the book to the teacher, who loved it so much that she plans to read it to her students every year. She even had my daughter sign it as a special keepsake, which made the moment even more meaningful.
The illustrations are warm and inviting, perfectly complementing the story’s gentle and uplifting tone. I highly recommend The Invisible String for parents, teachers, and anyone looking for a book that fosters emotional resilience and a sense of security in children. It’s a timeless and invaluable addition to any home or classroom library!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2025The Invisible String is the kind of book every child should have on their shelf. Whether it’s grief, separation anxiety, or just missing a loved one, this story offers a gentle and beautiful reminder that love keeps us connected—no matter where we are. As a teacher, I’ve read this aloud in class during difficult times, and it always brings comfort, even to adults. The message is universal and timeless. The illustrations are sweet and the language is simple enough for young kids to understand, yet powerful enough to move anyone. Highly, highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2025The sweetest story for kids - works well to help them understand loss or big chnages. Has become my go-to gift for grieving kids
- Reviewed in the United States on April 4, 2025I work with children and youth with emotional and/or behavioral challenges, and their families. This book is useful for all ages, and is very helpful when someone is dealing with grief/a loss/bereavement. All clinicians in my team use this book with several clients, and we all like it very much. I purchased it as a gift for those I mentor, as they complete their graduate studies.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 5, 2025I really enjoyed this book. It was beautifully written and illustrated. Still I think it was too deep for my 3 1/2 year old grandson. Hopefully he’ll understand it by 5 years old because they moved across the country to another state.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 16, 2025This book is such a sweet and comforting read for kids. It’s helped my children understand connection and separation in a meaningful way after a loss in our family. A great gift for families or classrooms.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2023While this children's picture book is actually about unconditional and life-long love, not specifically about grief, it is a wonderful story for showing children how love (an "invisible string" that connects people and animals) never wanes, nor does it ever die, even when loved ones are far away from one another. The story has an incredibly reassuring and comforting tone which could likely bring peace and comfort to its audience.
Again, while this book is not specifically about grief, there is mention of a dead uncle when the children in the story question whether the invisible string of love can even reach all the way up to Uncle Brian in Heaven. This particular page could open up many conversations with bereaved siblings regarding their brother(s) and/or sister(s).
- Reviewed in the United States on May 11, 2025Well written & my 7 year old years reads it 3-4 times a day. All the cousins too! Daddy may be in Heaven but he can alway stay with her & everyone else. The Best book for children when they learning how to grieve.

This is a great book for helping give your toddler a strategy for separation anxiety. It’s helping us have conversations with him. The only downside is the reference to heaven which we don’t want to introduce yet. He’s too young to read so we change it. But just an FYI
