I usually get drives based on WD but their portable 1TB drives have custom cable so if you lose it your SOL. I decided to try this drive for my macbook pro and it's perfect. Got 3 more for my family so everyone now has 1tb to use for timemachine, storage etc. Format most of it for Mac OSX but some for fat32 so i can swap files with windows people.

First one I purchased failed after about four months. Purchased another one thinking it was a fluke but the new one failed right out of the box with that dreaded click click click noise.

For one, I get to carry it wherever I go. This way I am sure my critical data is with me and will not be tampered. I am a frequent buyer of portable drives because of the nature of my job. And Iomega has never disappointed me till date! This time I got to purchase the Iomega eGo 500 GB USB 2 portable hard drive 34945. My office mate has this drive and I was really impressed by its design, the color and its ultrathin mold. Immediately checked different web sites to know the dimension of this device and it was just 2.1 x 7 x 5.1 inches! A true portable hard drive indeed and also installs quick. The silver color of this hard drive matches perfectly with my MacBook Air notebook. The compactness allows me to carry it anywhere but with the risk of dropping it. With the Drop guard, it is safe if the fall is a short one less than 5 ft. For Mac users, there is Trend Micro and I am worry free for atleast a year. The software is not a part of the package but has to be downloaded. I use the QuickProtect as I do not wanna miss any opportunity for safe backups.

Worked well for a while but now my computer doesn't recognize it. At first the person at the apple store got it working after fiddling around with a different cord but eventually got it to work with my cord. Now it doesn't work at all.

Mine was failing the first day. It makes a clicking noise and then my lap top warns that I've "disconnected the device impropperly" but I've touched nothing. After failing, it eventually comes back around on its own, and is recognized. Day three it was still doing this, & the clicking sound during failure was getting louder.

Customer support. My product was under warranty on day 3, and I could chat with iomega tech support who told me this product needed to be replaced. It was not nice that I would be charged $25 to do the shipping. They built the faulty product, why am I the customer out $25?

Amazon was great - giving me a full refund on the Iomega hard drive and the travel case I'd bought for it (since I won't need that now). And their return shipping was only $8.25

I got the Iomega eGo Helium 1TB drive to go with my MacBook Air. I needed a drive that was small and nice looking and big enough to use for Time Machine backups. The Helium 1TB drive seemed perfect. It arrived. I plugged it in and it worked fine (no "power" problems). After about 4 weeks of use -- plugging it in, unplugging it, etc., as needed -- it suddenly started to make "clicking" sounds when it was plugged in (sounding like the read/write head was locking into position, then unlocking, at 1-2 sec intervals). I unplugged it and plugged it back in a couple times. Eventually, it started working and everything was good for another week or two. Then again it started making the "clicking" sounds. This time, it never recovered.

So now what? How do you return a drive that has a full backup of all your data? Normally I would destroy the disk, but you can't return a disk you've mashed with a hammer. Interesting conundrum.

I got this hard drive a couple weeks ago and it has served me well so far. I have no complaints and it is more than enough memory for me to store my pictures, musics, documents and whatever else I may need. Its very light and small so it doesn't take up a lot of room. The price was good to for what I got. I have a mac and it works well with it.

Instructions say the drive should appear in Finder when plugged in to USB. The light lit. I could feel the drive spinning withing the enclosure but, the drive never appeared in Finder. Using this drive reminded me of Iomega's click of death. Fewer than 1 in 100 of the drives they shipped worked. I guess this drive suffers from a similar fault. Returning it.
