There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later.
Based on the reviews for this device I was prepared for a long study in order to get the thing to actually work or hopefully work well especially as all of our machines are Macs and I'm an ex-PC guy.
Instead, what I'd have to say is, though it could have been easier if it simply configured itself as soon as I plugged it into the wall and the router, it couldn't get much easier as there is a necessary effort in order to access files away from the home network, hence the "Personal Cloud" bit. This requires external access and the only way to get that done is via port-forwarding and that has to be configured by you.
But, I'm pretty sure the people that struggled with this product aren't idiots, they're probably running on older routers and home networking setups and without another reference who would know what the problem is and why it's not working? We just upgraded our whole networking setup a couple of months ago and all the devices are less than 6 months old.
Installing the IOMega Management utility on all the macs wasn't a struggle as it was easily found and installed, I set up shares for everyone on the device and a Personal (or rather Family) Cloud for everyone. Then had everyone install the IOMega Management utility on their Macs, the Macs had all quickly picked up the base device but now they automatically added all the configured shares and Personal/Family Cloud and voila! That's all there was to it.
Next, I configured port-forwarding, which was easy and worked right away.
So, good luck. The price is right and the thing works well for us, if you need the thing don't give up on it until you've checked the other parts in the mix, such as routers and software.

On the downside, it uses the Twonky media server, which is quite powerful, but Iomega has configured it such that it is very difficult to customize (I suspect it is impossible to customize without violating your warranty). All I wanted to do is be able to select an Artist, then select an Album by that artist, and finally choose between playing the entire album or a specific track.
At first, I found that I could only choose an Artist, and then choose from all the tracks on all the albums by that artist, or choose from all my albums where every artists' albums were intermixed. After several days, I discovered how to do what I wanted, but with 40 or so Artists, it was taking forever to scroll through the list.
I knew that Twonky allows you to setup the navigation such that you could see all the artists with names beginning with A-D, E-H, etc., and then choose from a shorter list of artists. But how to set this up on the Iomega??
I found instructions for hacking into the Iomega server and accessing the necessary files. Still, these were mounted on a read-only partition, which meant I had to remove the hard disc from the Iomega, plug it into a computer running Linux, and create some symbolic links to read-write directories. If this paragraph makes no sense to you, do not expect to customize Twonky.
Regarding customer service. When I first was looking at this device, I saw both this device and the Home Media Cloud Edition. I asked whether both were still being sold, or if one replaced the other. It took 10 days for Iomega to respond with: The home media is still being produced and sold, but eventually the EZ is the new product line and as for functionality the two devices are very identical. Subsequently, as I ran into the issues described above, I asked Iomega for help. Iomega immediately responded, asking more questions. 3 days later they responded by saying my request had been escalated to "Level 3." That was 9 days ago, and I have heard nothing since.
So, if you are looking for a basic media server and backup device, this device will be perfect for you.
If you are fairly specific about how you want that media server to allow you to choose what you will listen to, this device is either not for you, or you better have some computer skills.
Top reviews from other countries
Overall nice purchase with very nice performance of the device, Amazon delivery service was fantastic.
The delivery was very fast. The installation for the back up drive was easy. But I am not able to install the cloud. I worked at least 7h00 to fix the problem. Must manually configure my router to fix the ports redirection. The documentation I have find is not complete. The phone number for the help is there for computer. For the second number I got, the line is always busy. Maybe I will have to return it before i get a nervous breakdown.
Bye!
