I have an iPad Air wrapped in Otterbox Defender and the iPad Air + case fit perfectly snug into the iPad slot on the top. I either use it the expected way or I use the Otterbox Defender shield stand that comes with my case to hold the iPad upright on a table and use the controller in my lap. Both ways work fine.
Note, when this controller 1st came out it was crazy expensive and supported 100+ App Store games. The 4 I have above still work with it, but I noticed others that used to work with it aren't available at the App Store anymore, so do your research on each game you consider for this and know that this controller DOES NOT WORK WITH ALL GAMES. The app developer has to code the game/app to work with this controller, so very few games do when you compare them to all the tons of games available.
Check out ION's website to verify compatibility, but I found several games they still list as compatible that don't exist anymore on the app store, so be careful and do your research.
That said, I see many clueless people leaving some negative reviews on the games I have mentioned above and they simply don't understand that this 4 games and others are meant to be used with an iCade Controller, not tilt or touch, etc.
- Listed on the company's "Legacy" page, which I assume means it's no longer a supported product.
- Only particular games work with it, so it's not as universally usable as I'd hoped.
One thing to note, if you have the 12.9" iPad Pro, it won't fit in this in landscape mode. You can still use it (the connection is via Bluetooth), but you'll need to prop it up with something else.

This thing is fun. Makes you feel like you're playing your games in an arcade.
Good size, sturdy, and doesn't wobble on the desk or move if you're not being overly aggressive.
The buttons are LOUD. Really loud, and get annoying after a while. If you're serious about using this a lot, then look for the tutorials on the web on how to replace the bottons with Happ Controls buttons, or the arcade sets available on eBay.
I just wish there were more Arcade games availiable on the iPad. This is not the manufacturer's fault however.
The biggest pro: playing Pinball Arcade. The joystick gives the game a tactile feel which improves the gameplay.
The biggest con: if you get too rough with the controls, your iPad can fly out!

There's one major flaw... the joystick uses a square gate (a physical restriction at the base of the joystick) that is oriented to the diagonal. What this means is that when you move the joystick the gate is always attempting to deliver it to a diagonal position. Which means that playing any games that require critical control of horizontal or vertical movements, eg Pac Man, are almost unplayable due to the joystick constantly frustrating your attempts to move leading to premature "Game Over". It's such a simple design choice that ruins the device. Why not use an octagonal, or even a round, gate? I do hope that a future iCade iteration addresses this because, until then, this is nothing but frustration to use and it could have been perfect.
I use the controller mainly with iPad mini, design works with or without Apple screen cover.
About the games: I use this controller with iMAME. Have the emulators or game collections that support iCADE first! If tablets touch does not work for you, get this controller and have a blast with those arcade oldies you love.
