Ione Forrester is the eldest daughter, yet the only child still at home. She is due to marry Bradford Whittington, III, a man who is to be joining her father’s medical practice. A week before the wedding, catching him in a lie and with another woman, has her calling off the wedding, upsetting her society parents, and finds her shunned. Her parents find her a teaching position to accept in Dorado, Texas, mid-term and shipped away. Her life will take a new turn, no maid, cook, or high-class amenities.
Morgan Shipley does not want to follow his family’s interest in cattle or farming. He has a love of art, wood, and creating beautiful pieces of furniture. He will leave his family home and settle in Dorado, building a business and hopefully a future. After seeing the results from one man finding a mail-order bride, he will attempt that route himself. But what happens when the new schoolmarm catches his eye, a woman to court in person, instead of by letter is so much more appealing.
The plot will have Ione Forrester leaving a thriving city to start a new life in a small, quaint town in Texas as a schoolmarm. She will face many problems but has some forward and creative ways of teaching the children, engaging them with innovative ideas, hands-on experiences, and teaching real life applications to make learning fun. This small town has one boarding house that houses many of the single townspeople, so there is a camaraderie of the residence and chance to get to know each other. The mentioning of turnvater was a great piece of history and how this town had incorporated that for the men. Can Ione make a new future in Dorado and not only help the children, but prove her worth to the adults? Will the future in the Lone Star state will bring happiness for Morgan and Ione and allow them to pursue their dreams, rather than those of their families.
Favorite quote: “She sure used fifty-cent words when cheaper, and easier to understand one would do.”
Morgan doesn't take long to realize he loves Ione and pursues her, I found the way he went around it quite refreshing and lovely. He wasn't afraid to show her how much he cared and how much she meant to him.
I loved Grandma's note to them about the quilt. That was so precious. Wonderful story. I hope she got to keep teaching for a while.
