Ip Man kicks a Thai kickboxer down a flight of stairs! What could be better than that? And indeed it is the best fight in the movie, better than the climactic fight with a local rival which is still good but is a bit down-key. Tonally though it fits this excellent Ip Man entry, which while lacking the historical narrative sweep of the first Ip Man, I enjoyed just as much. That has much to do with the writers expanding the characterizations of Ip Man's wife, played by the beautiful Lynn Xiong, and Donnie Yen's Ip Man. Early in the film, she even asks Ip Man to dim the lights and calls him to bed, a rare scene of intimacy in this series. Much of the last act of the film is devoted to their marital relationship and it packs a real emotional punch. I had tears in my eyes at the end. Ms. Xiong, now in her thirties and wearing ruby red lipstick, is more luminous than she has ever been in earlier films.
Don't be put off by Mike Tyson. His role is brief, and astonishingly he is fine in the movie. The twisted and corrupt Brits in charge of Hong Kong are once again the baddies here as in Ip Man 2.
Ip Man embraces who he fully is in this movie, no longer ambivalent about his self as a warrior who must stand up to wrongdoing, not just a teacher of students. Everyone give it up for the Ip Man!

Ip Man 1 - Five Star
Ip Man 3 - Four Star
Ip Man 4 - Three-n-half
Ip Man 2 - Three star
There are two plots working throughout, and though the story line posted on summary with Tyson being some kind of land baron, it's half true. The fight scenes are usually solid with Donnie so you'll be entertained. Listening to Tyson act is pretty cringe-worthy especially when he tries to speak Cantonese.
But overall, it is entertaining.
Random, the whole time I am thinking of "Taken" (1, 2 & 3) w/ Liam Neeson -- where his daughter keeps gettin' taken by the bad guys and so Hollywood has to make three movies about the kidnapping (and failure of a father). Basically, Ip Man attracts so much attention as a fighter even though he avoids it, and it becomes unavoidable. So yes, Batman looks for trouble. Ip Man runs into trouble.

NO SUBTITLES - if you turn on CC - you better be a speed reader. I wish it were dubbed in English or had proper subtitles.
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on April 23, 2016
WARNING - NOT IN THE DESCRIPTION - There are no SUBTITLES with this film - which is not mentioned. It does have CC - or closed captioning for deaf people which is similar - but the problem is unless you are a speed reader it is next to impossible to read the CC when streamed onto a HDTV. Now, I watched part of the movie letterboxed widescreen on my computer with the CC and it was fine - showing up in the letterbox. However on my HDTV steamed it was 16:9 non letterboxed - filling the screen. The CCs were fast and hard to read and all over the lower part of the screen. Also, subtitles are usually at the very bottom of the screen with plenty of time to read them vs CC is about 3/4's of the way down. I got tired of trying to speed read the CCs. Also, for an action film, there is a lot of dialog. The film I'd give a 3-4 star if it had proper subtitles - not CCs. I really enjoyed the IP series 1 and 2 - so I'm a bit upset that Amazon did not make clear that this has no subtitles and or that it is not dubbed. I think there are dubbed versions of the earlier movies - I maybe wrong... but the successful movies from Asia are released in subtitles and English dubbed versions. This one - obviously - the foreign distributor did not have the time or money to export it correctly.... If you can read fast CC - go for it... or watch it on your PC in Widescreen letterbox - that's fine... otherwise just know that watching it on an HDTV might be a bit challenging. Still a great movie though.

Just some quick backstory
I absolutely LOVED the First 'Ip Man' film, it easily became my favorite martial arts film of all time,
it was a genera defying work with not just great action, but a well portrayed story too!
As for 'Ip Man 2' While they stepped up the action, it felt kind of like the second matrix movie,
Focusing way to much on visuals and action.
And while it was still way more entertaining then the second matrix film, and had great action, I still felt it did not live up to the first in any other acpect.
Now for the review!
Now we come to the third film in the Donnie Yen Ip Man Trilogy, It has a much stronger story then the second, with multiple simultaneous plot lines,
Yet offers good pacing, and some fights that rival, and even surpass some from the second AND first films!
However there are some odd choices in direction, and it seems like some content is not needed, it's still overall a great film.
While I'm not ready to say it's better then the first, it's still fairly close, and even though mike Tyson seems like an odd choice, they make it work,
And by the end you'll understand why he was chosen.
All-in-all, it's a great film that handles plot much better then many other martial arts movies, and if you liked the first or second Ip Man, you'll love this!
While you can watch this movie on it's own, and it's not technically 100% dependent on the others,
you should at least watch the first film before watching this.

As a second generation student of Ip Man, I went on to teach Chi Sow Wing Chung in the U.S. Army...
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on November 3, 2021
No one could touch me until I met another first-gen student, in Advanced Infantry training, who had studied Si Lum Tao... another form of Wing Chung. The other privates would just sit around watching us spar every chance we could.
Though Donnie Yen knew nothing of Wing Chung before training for the movie, he pulled it off seamlessly, a true mixed martial artist. I studied over twenty styles from across the globe and still remain teachable. Which I understand is a difficult thing for most people. Remaining a humble peaceful warrior even when under attack. Kudos to Donnie!

IP Man, der Dritte!
Reviewed in Germany 🇩🇪 on February 26, 2018

Donnie in veste Yip Man al suo terzo episodio
Reviewed in Italy 🇮🇹 on March 25, 2017
