Format: Paperback
The anthology of essays that the book contains helps problematize a usually rejected vision of Ireland: One that assumes it as a colony. Through the several perspectives offered, one can begin to understand the complexity of the island's location in the geography of empire and its position in it. An excellent set of perspectives.

This book does what it sets out to very successfully: It is an effective overview of Irish History as it pertains to the British Empire. As part of the Oxford History series, this is not a surprise. Best suited for use as a reference text or high-level subject overview, serious students of Irish history will find its level a bit elementary. Overall, a good introduction to Irish history in the late medieval and modern eras.
