Editorial Reviews
Review
"Writing with an unhurried and considered hand, his wryness evident but checked by a brooding malaise, Monagan visits with landscapes both sullied and unsullied, in search of Ireland's many silver tongues. There are great bar-side chats with anonymous pubsters, as well as a wonderfully anecdote-strewn day with author J. P. Donleavy. A penetrating, droll embrace of an Ireland in the midst of tumult." —Kirkus Reviews
"Incisive, wry, and witty, but also coldly surgical and it repeatedly and perfectly catches the zeitgeist of an Ireland hell-bent on self-destruction. Monagan sees it all: there is Mad Max stuff in here, but this American-in-Ireland's analysis is also highly reasoned and grinning. Read it." —Patrick McCabe, author, The Butcher Boy, Breakfast on Pluto, and The Stray Sod Country

I usually don't enjoy the "I" books where "I" did this and "I"did that. This book is different. You will truly enjoy the story and the descriptions of the people and the country. If you love Ireland and have traveled there frequently over the years you will love this read. Very funny too!

Having been to Ireland - both the Republic and the North, I enjoyed descriptions and the feelings. (Especially the North.). But the searching for an Ireland that probably existed only in self-serving memory, seemed a little silly. Better to see and feel what is as clearly as possible.

Am reading this together with my boyfriend, who is from Ireland, and we are both really enjoying it. Very funny in parts, and spot-on, my friend says, on the author's views on the changing economy and culture. Reminds us of Bill Bryson's books.

Great Book. Beautiful writing. Not a spot in the book did I want to skim past. All was beautifully rendered. I'm moving to Ireland within the next few months, and I couldn't have read a better book to prepare me.

fun book to curl up and read. Good insight on modern day Ireland and a must for those anticipating a trip that begs an understanding of how Ireland became what it is

The author does a very good, but sometimes very subtle job of explaining factors contributing to the downfall of the Celtic Tiger economy. His comments come first hand as an ex-pat living in Ireland (Co. Cork)with his family.
This is a very worth while read for any fan of Eire.

lots of tidbits of information

The author is a good writer in that he seems to accurately portray conversations and experiences bringing the reader along with him and I enjoyed that. Yet where does he take you in Ireland? To pubs, alot! Houses where much drinking is going on and behavior and conversations become weirder and weirder as if this is something to admire, to a gallery opening where drunkenness leads to the group getting kicked out - to visit a woman who openly professes to being a witch but "such a nice witch she was". I do appreciate his apparent accurate portrayal of historical events as when Mountbatten was murdered, interviewing local people for their views about it - the Celtic tiger rise and fall. But I especially enjoyed his searching in Northern Ireland as to what happened, how it impacted peoples' lives and the priests and ministers who sought to help bring people together once again. So thank you David Monagan for taking the effort to search out the fascinating little country of Ireland. It's been several years since the peace agreement with Northern Ireland. The border as far I know is open, the only difference is the change from km to miles and euros to pounds... I hope in your next book you can look beyond the pubs - at this rate how many will be open in the future anyway with the lockdown? Perhaps when the dust settles, assuming it will, you can venture out and see how it has impacted peoples' lives, assuming you too will still call the Emerald Isle your home.

Ireland post & pre Euro.

It amazes me how the author has put an old Ireland feel into what has essentially become of ireland and how lives and life has changed since becoming a member of the European Union and trading with the euro, he also delves into things that have often in the past been taboo topics. Very enjoyable read.
