First, I love the fact that the characters are a little older, and thus more mature. It's hard for me to read New Adult books because I'm in my 50's, have children the age of the characters and to be honest, don't really want to read about the uncertainty and angst of young adulthood. I also loved that there is some cultural diversity in the main characters. In the first two books, Lock is Native American and in this book Boner is Latino, and while he's not really in touch with his cultural heritage (which makes sense since he wasn't really wasn't raised to be immersed in it), it was still nice to see the diversity there. Sometimes as a person of color, I feel that ethnic/racial minorities are basically invisible in romance genre. There are a couple of racial epithets used by various members of the MC when discussing Latino cartel members/gangs but I think realistically that's how the MC's would talk so I wasn't offended.
Second, what I love about all of Cat Porter's books is that the characters are complex; there are no clear heroes or villains. Each character is portrayed with a lot of depth; you find yourself loving them, being infuriated with them, disappointed in them, shocked by them, laughing with them, grieving with them. These are not cookie cutter heroes and heroines but complex characters who are portrayed in very realistic ways. I really like all of Ms. Porter's heroines, and Jill is no exception. She had gone thru a lot in her teen years and made some mistakes, but she was still hopeful, she still had dreams, as Boner would say, she still reached for the light. I liked the fact that she struggled with her relationship with Boner even though he was good to her, she wasn't sure she still wanted to be part of the MC life.
I really struggled with my feelings toward Boner, which is probably why I liked the character so much. Initially, I couldn't figure out why Ms. Porter would focus on Boner, but I AM SO GLAD SHE DID, MERCY, MERCY ME!!! At first, even though he sounded like he was sexy as all hell, I was really having a hard time reconciling the current Boner with his past, which at times was quite violent. I also had issues with his relationship with Ines. I also wondered if a bad-ass alpha/biker man would say some of the things Boner said when he was thinking to himself or would write the kind of poetry he wrote. But I then had to chastise myself: why not? I was guilty of doing what Boner did to himself: I was judging him by his past mistakes and not allowing for the complexity in his character. I had to realize he didn't have to be defined by his mistakes or imprisoned by his past if he didn't want to be; he could be deep, profound and a killer too - these characteristics are not mutually exclusive.
I think the thing I love the most about Cat Porter's characters is the intensity of the emotional intimacy that develops between the characters. Yes, the sex scenes are hot and heavy but the way Jill and Boner connect emotionally, OMG!!!!! I was reading passages to my husband & told him to take notes (LOL)! I rarely cry when reading a book, but I cried thru the last chapter and the epilogue. I said this when I read the last book but it bears repeating, I don't think ANYONE writes a better epilogue than Cat Porter. Its the kind of thing you want someone to say to you on your wedding day or about you when you transition from this life to the next.
In case you haven't figured it out by this LONG review (my reviews are usually a paragraph long), I LOVED THIS BOOK. I can't wait until the next one. While I would love to hear about Butler, I REALLY REALLY REALLY hope Cat Porter writes a book about Finger and Tania. Ms. Porter has quickly become one of my favorite authors . Thank you so much Ms. Porter for such a wonderful reading experience. I rarely read books a second time but I will be re-reading this series!
With Boner's story, we get the whole sordid tale behind the man who is as sexy as he is mysterious. The man who wouldn't hesitate to take a man out without remorse but holds pain behind his eyes that most definitely wounds him daily. Watching as he secretly pines for Jill, the woman who he sent away all those years ago when she was just a girl seeking out the man who saved her life to say thank you. Who now is a part of Boner's life due to circumstance and who pines for this brooding man just as much as he pines for her.
Boner. The enforcer. The poet. The protector. We get to witness just how complex a man he truly is. Keeping well-guarded secrets while his heart melts little by little whenever Jill is near or her daughter Becca calls out for her Bo. I just loved this man so much. And Jill. A beautiful soul. Selfless, caring and simply wanting the best life possible for herself and her little girl. Hoping for a new start not wanting to be anyone's Old Lady again but truly not having the will to fight her feelings for Boner. And gaining the confidence to finally be her own woman and surprising the heck of herself and me as a reader when she takes matters into her own hands! She's amazing are all of the author's heroines. Jill and Boner's scenes together getting to know one another and spending time with Becca were wonderful. And when they finally break the tension and give in to their desires, let's just say I was fanning myself and often. The passion between Jill and Boner is so damn gorgeous. Written so beautifully. You just want them to make it. They both deserve to find that small piece of happiness.
What I find most compelling about the author's work is that she takes the time to let you get to know the characters. We get many glimpses into the past and how Boner met Dig, how he became a One-Eyed Jack and why he chose to be a loner. But it never feels overdone or redundant. Every word is meticulously planned and when you do get to the last page, your heart is completely full, completely satisfied and you find yourself a bit sad that the end of this journey is really here.
These MC books are in a class by themselves and trust me I read a ton of them. Iron & Bone stands out as one of the best I've read this year. The author successfully combines tender and tough like no one else. There are plenty of raw and gritty scenes to keep you on the edge of your seat but they are counteracted by ones that warm your soul and make you smile. Simply an outstanding combo.
Highly recommended and a huge 5+++ stars!!
